Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski and Karna Younger, assistant librarian and open pedagogy librarian in KU Libraries, adapted a source evaluation rubric they use to measure if students improved both the amount and quality of their evaluative steps taken to verify the credibility of a source. Their study was published in the journal College & Research Libraries. Read the KU News story.
"Facebook/WeChat Use and Acculturation: A Study of Chinese International Students in the United States," a paper co-written by doctoral student Pan Liu, Muhammad Ittefaq, Mauryne Abwao and Ursula Kamanga has been accepted for presentation at the 69th Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs (MCAA 2020). The conference is going to be online Oct. 16-18. The authors wish to express their gratitude to Drs. Peter Bobkowski, Joseph Erba and Mugur Geana for their generous help on this project.

Associate Professor Jerry Crawford’s J552 Multimedia Reporting class welcomed 2006 J-School alumna Haley Harrison to its Wednesday lecture last week. Harrison, anchor/reporter for KMBC and KCWE in Kansas City, spoke with the students about newsroom roles, internships and career opportunities. She has agreed to provide professional critiques and mentorship for the class this semester.

BEA Scholarships: The Broadcast Education Association is now accepting applications for its scholarship program. The BEA offers thousands of dollars in scholarships for study in broadcasting and electronic media. The deadline to apply is Oct. 15. Learn more here.

ACES scholarships: Applications are now being accepted for scholarships through the ACES Education Fund, which awards six scholarships annually. ACES: The Society for Editing is the nation’s leading organization of editing professionals, educators and students. Learn more and apply here.
The Reynolds Journalism Institute’s 2020-21 Student Innovation Competition at the Missouri School of Journalism invites college students to participate by tackling engagement with a news organization. A student or student team will partner with a news organization to devise an engagement idea innovative to that organization. Applications detailing the team’s idea are due by Oct. 31. The chosen finalist teams will implement their idea at the partner news organization for three months before presenting the results on Feb. 26, 2021, in front of a panel of judges and the public on Zoom. First-prize winner gets $10,000. More details here.

Nutrition Nook is open: Did you know that half of KU undergraduate students report being food insecure? To address this need, the J-School created the Nutrition Nook, which is open in Room 113 in Stauffer-Flint Hall. Anyone is welcome to stop by and take what they need.

William Allen White documentary on TV |
“William Allen White: What’s the Matter with Kansas” makes it television debut next month. The documentary, sponsored by the William Allen White Foundation and directed by Academy Award-winning KU Professor Kevin Willmott, premiered on campus in 2018 during the school’s celebration of the 150th birth year of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Emporia Gazette editor. The film will air on KTWU at 8 p.m. on Sept. 14. Viewers also may purchase a DVD at the KU Bookstore.

Caitlin Doornbos, 2014 J-School graduate and reporter for Stars and Stripes, was featured in a KWCH-12 story written by 2019 J-School graduate Grant DeMars. The newspaper's future is in jeopardy after Secretary of Defense Mark Esper sent Stars and Stripes a memo saying it must end publication by the end of this month.
Malik Jackson, 2020 J-School graduate, is joining WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tennessee, as a multimedia journalist.
Keely McCormick, 2020 J-School graduate, is joining KVAL-TV in Eugene, Oregon, as a multimedia journalist.
