The Diocese of Venice in Florida

The Mustard Seed

October 11, 2019

Office of the Bishop
Bishop Frank J. Dewane announces the following:

Reverend Paulo Nascimento de Oliveria, is relieved of his duties as Parochial Vicar of St. Jude Parish, Sarasota, effective October 1, 2019, as he returned to his home Diocese of Anápolis GO. Brazil.

Pope Francis Prayer Intention for October - That the breath of the Holy Spirit engender a new missionary "spring" in the Church.

Pope Francis Prayer Intention for November - That a spirit of dialogue, encounter, and reconciliation emerge in the Near East, where diverse religious communities share their lives together.

Diocese 35th Anniversary Mass - Bishop Frank J. Dewane, Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida, invites the public to attend a celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the founding of the Diocese with an outdoor Mass at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 25 at the Holy Eucharistic Monument, located at Riverview Pointe Preserve in Bradenton. The memorial includes two carved relief's depicting a Mass and a Baptism, and a 20-foot obelisk which is figured with carved symbols of the Holy Trinity. A 60-foot Memorial Cross is nearby. Bishop Dewane will be dedicating the Mass for the people of the Diocese of Venice to mark its founding on October 25, 1984, and in honor of the 12 priests who accompanied the 1539 Spanish Expedition and the Native Americans who inhabited the shores. The Preserve is adjacent to DeSoto National Memorial and located a half-mile north of State Road 64. All are encouraged to wear sunscreen and a hat. Personal chairs are welcome. For more information, please contact Gail Ardy at [email protected] or call 941-484-9543. (CLICK HERE  for the flier.)

Prayers Needed - Pope Francis recently approved a miracle attributed to Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, advancing his beatification. The Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints promulgated the decree approving Archbishop Sheen's miracle on July 6. Another recognized miracle attributed to the Archbishop would lead to his Canonization for Sainthood. The hope is that the second miracle be realized in 2019, the 100th Anniversary of Archbishop Sheen's Ordination to the Priesthood. In particular, two individuals, Robert and Wanda, require prayers for the intention of their healing. (CLICK HERE for a prayer for the intercession of Archbishop Sheen.)

Veterans Day Mass - This year marks the 10th consecutive year that the Diocese of Venice is holding a Memorial Mass on Veterans Day in honor of the men and women who have served our country and continue to serve and protect us today. The Mass is being held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, November 11 at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72/Clark Road, approximately five miles east of I-75. All are invited to attend, and active military personnel are encouraged to wear their uniform. Although the event is held in the amphitheater, you are encouraged to wear sunscreen and bring a hat. There is ample seating and parking at the cemetery. For further information, please contact Gail Ardy at [email protected] or 941-484-9543. (CLICK HERE for a flier.)

Prayer to Mother Cabrini, the Patron Saint of Immigrants - The prayer below was written by a Dreamer at Cabrini University. Please publish this prayer in your bulletins as a reminder for the Faithful to continue to pray for Dreamers.

Mother Cabrini, Patron of Immigrants, who came to help those like me, who abandoned everything we knew. We left country, family, and friends to find a safer place. You embraced the freedom of America and I embrace it now. Sometimes, I'm afraid, anxious, and overwhelmed. I may be criticized, ridiculed, and misunderstood because I look, speak, and act differently. Yet, your love for all, especially the poor and the refugee, is my guiding light. It gives me hope. And I offer the prayer now, that you so boldly prayed then, "Dear God, fortify me with the grace of your Holy Spirit and give your peace to my soul." Amen. Written by a Cabrini University student, this prayer card was created by the Catholic Legal Immigration Network. To learn more about supporting immigrants, visit www.cliniclegal.org.

Prayer for Safety During Hurricane Season - The 2019 "Atlantic Hurricane Season" continues through November 30. All are encouraged to pray for protection from the storms that often threaten Southwest Florida. The devastation seen by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and Tropical Storm Imelda which flooded parts of Texas and Louisiana, as well as Hurricanes Michael (2018) and Irma (2017) reinforce the fact that we need to pray for God's protection and care. (CLICK HERE for a copy of the prayer in English and CLICK HERE for a copy of the prayer in Spanish.)
