We are proud to announce that Mary Patricia Moynihan has been accepted into the Klingenstein Center at Columbia College to pursue her Masters Degree in private school leadership. Mary Patricia will be pursuing her masters degree full-time which means she will need to leave Peabody. Profe cares deeply about Peabody and although she is very excited about this new adventure, she will miss our community very much. We want to thank her for her dedication and commitment to our students. We wish her all the best! We are in the process of hiring a new Spanish teacher for Grades 4-8. Emmie Wright will be moving to grades K-3 for this year.

Bethany Melton Taylor, preschool teaching assistant, is taking the year to stay home with her family. We will miss Ms. Bethany this year! We are happy to announce that Ella Chin will be joining the Pre- Kindergarten staff. Ella graduated from Peabody in 2013, holds an Associate of Science in Education and an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts, and is a fourth-year Spanish major at the University of Virginia. Her studies in language and culturally sustaining pedagogies support her work at Peabody and her passion for education as a social justice movement. Ms. Chin has maintained a presence in our community throughout her high school and college years while serving as a substitute teacher, tutor, Camp Invention counselor, and Kids Night Out host. With a background in bilingual children’s theater, Bringing Science to PreK, and Mindfulness for Children, she serves as both a nurturing caretaker and an inspiring teacher, and she is excited to be a part of the Peabody PreK magic.

We are also excited to welcome Geneva Mommsen, who will be our new outdoor educator. Geneva received her B.A. in Zoology from Miami University of Ohio and holds many certifications for environmental education programs including Project WILD and National Geographic Educators. She has held multiple positions at Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden in the Education Department; leading summer camps, overnight programming, and working with the ambassador animal collection. Most recently Geneva served as the Education & Volunteer Coordinator for the National Marine Life Center in Massachusetts, a non-profit organization that rehabilitates and releases injured and ill seals and sea turtles. When not helping students make discoveries in nature, you can find her hiking or kayaking, baking something with lots of cinnamon, or brushing up on ballroom dance skills. 

Ayesha Ahmad will be joining the 4/5 team as a new teaching assistant. Ayesha holds a master's degree in English from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park. Before working as a reporter for a local newspaper in Maryland, she taught elementary school for two years in Raleigh, NC.; she has owned her current wedding and portrait photography business for the past 11 years. She moved to Charlottesville with her family in the summer of 2019, and the younger of her two sons attends Peabody in the Lower School. In her free time, she reads books excessively, but she also enjoys baking, hiking, and handwork.

We ask that you please pick up during your assigned time and door(s) as much as possible. We understand many families need flexibility and, as always, all students may be picked up until 3:30pm.

In an effort to reduce and reuse, we are not mailing new Car Placards to families this year. Instead, please email the Peabody Office: [email protected] if you need a replacement from last year's car placard or an additional car placard.

Our After-School program will be starting on August 31st for students in Grades PreK-5. After-School will run each day from 3:15-5:30PM. Parents must register for the program using the parent portal and pay the enrollment fee before going to After-School. Additionally, in order to maintain the "team" approach we are using during the day, students will be placed into three cohorts, PreK, K-3 and 4-5. Maximum enrollments on each After-School team will be necessary to maintain distancing requirements. The maximum enrollment in PreK is 8 students, and 10 students each on the K-3 and 4/5 teams. Homework club will not be offered this year as it would necessitate the mixing of students across teams. We will use the first part of After-School to allow students to work quietly on homework.

We strongly encourage families to pick up their child(ren) at the prescribed dismissal time and not use After-School unless necessary. Having After-School care, although necessary, does impact the "team" approach we have developed during the school day. We know this may be a burden but it will help increase the likelihood of students being able to attend school in person. Thank you for your understanding as we work to keep our students and staff safe.
