Thank You!

Thank you to all of our families for your patience, attentiveness and encouragement this week. It was so great to see everyone again and share space (albiet distanced) together. We are so proud of our teachers and students. Peabody is a special place!
Staff Updates

We are proud to announce that Mary Patricia Moynihan has been accepted into the Klingenstein Center at Columbia College to pursue her Masters Degree in private school leadership. Mary Patricia will be pursuing her masters degree full-time which means she will need to leave Peabody. Profe cares deeply about Peabody and although she is very excited about this new adventure, she will miss our community very much. We want to thank her for her dedication and commitment to our students. We wish her all the best! We are in the process of hiring a new Spanish teacher for Grades 4-8. Emmie Wright will be moving to grades K-3 for this year.

Bethany Melton Taylor, preschool teaching assistant, is taking the year to stay home with her family. We will miss Ms. Bethany this year! We are happy to announce that Ella Chin will be joining the Pre- Kindergarten staff. Ella graduated from Peabody in 2013, holds an Associate of Science in Education and an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts, and is a fourth-year Spanish major at the University of Virginia. Her studies in language and culturally sustaining pedagogies support her work at Peabody and her passion for education as a social justice movement. Ms. Chin has maintained a presence in our community throughout her high school and college years while serving as a substitute teacher, tutor, Camp Invention counselor, and Kids Night Out host. With a background in bilingual children’s theater, Bringing Science to PreK, and Mindfulness for Children, she serves as both a nurturing caretaker and an inspiring teacher, and she is excited to be a part of the Peabody PreK magic.

We are also excited to welcome Geneva Mommsen, who will be our new outdoor educator. Geneva received her B.A. in Zoology from Miami University of Ohio and holds many certifications for environmental education programs including Project WILD and National Geographic Educators. She has held multiple positions at Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden in the Education Department; leading summer camps, overnight programming, and working with the ambassador animal collection. Most recently Geneva served as the Education & Volunteer Coordinator for the National Marine Life Center in Massachusetts, a non-profit organization that rehabilitates and releases injured and ill seals and sea turtles. When not helping students make discoveries in nature, you can find her hiking or kayaking, baking something with lots of cinnamon, or brushing up on ballroom dance skills.

Ayesha Ahmad will be joining the 4/5 team as a new teaching assistant. Ayesha holds a master's degree in English from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park. Before working as a reporter for a local newspaper in Maryland, she taught elementary school for two years in Raleigh, NC.; she has owned her current wedding and portrait photography business for the past 11 years. She moved to Charlottesville with her family in the summer of 2019, and the younger of her two sons attends Peabody in the Lower School. In her free time, she reads books excessively, but she also enjoys baking, hiking, and handwork.

In a year full of changes, we are so fortunate that we are welcoming such amazing new staff and faculty!
Arrival and Dismissal...Great Work this Week!!

Staggered Arrival

In order to allow our students to safely enter the building while practicing safe social distancing, and to allow time for morning temperature checks, we will be using a staggered arrival schedule, including three separate entrance locations: the main front door, the Batten door, and the side door in the small side parking lot.

We ask that you please drop your children off during your assigned time and at your assigned door(s). We appreciate your cooperation in working together to keep our students safe!

Staggered Dismissal

In order to allow our students to exit the building while practicing safe social distancing, we will be using a staggered dismissal schedule, including three separate pick-up locations.

We ask that you please pick up during your assigned time and door(s) as much as possible. We understand many families need flexibility and, as always, all students may be picked up until 3:30pm.

Please arrive at your scheduled time on Monday. It is the first day with all students on campus and it will help with traffic! Thank you!
From Nurse Tara

Reminder to all parents to complete SchoolDoc profiles for all of your students before Monday 8/31 when profiles will be locked. Keep in mind that we have paper copies of all previously submitted School Entrance Forms/Immunization Records and you do not need to upload this unless you have it easily available and want to. We are working to get those uploaded on our end. So if the profile reads 91% complete, that is great!

Please also bring any medications, epipens, or inhalers that your child may need access to during the school day and complete all of the appropriate documentation (Medication Authorization forms and Emergency Action Plans). If you need blank copies of these forms, you can find them in SchoolDoc. If you have already completed the form, you can upload to SchoolDoc from your desktop or by taking a photo of the form. If you upload a photo, please double check that it is in focus and the writing is legible. You are also welcome to hand off forms with medications to a greeter at morning drop off.
New Required School Forms Added

Please complete all required school forms on the parent portal by today! There are two new forms that were added this week. These forms must be completed in order for your child to attend school. Thanks for your cooperation!
Lunch at Peabody...Starts on Monday!

We are happy to be partnering with Yay Lunch! once again this year. Yay Lunch! provides individually wrapped meals delivered right to your student. In preparation for the year, we encourage families to log on and either update your account or create a new one. Yay Lunch! meal service will start on Monday!

For families who are packing a lunch for their child(ren), we are requesting that you avoid sending food that needs to be microwaved or reheated. We are attempting to eat lunch outside and reheating food hinders that process.
Car Placards for Arrival/Dismissal

Car Placards for Returning Families
In an effort to reduce and reuse, we are not mailing new Car Placards to families this year. Instead, please email the Peabody Office: [email protected] if you need a replacement from last year's car placard or an additional car placard.

Car Placards for New Families
If you did not already receive your two car placards at the Meet & Greet, please email the Peabody Office:  [email protected]

Thank you!
After-School Program

Our After-School program will be starting on August 31st for students in Grades PreK-5. After-School will run each day from 3:15-5:30PM. Parents must register for the program using the parent portal and pay the enrollment fee before going to After-School. Additionally, in order to maintain the "team" approach we are using during the day, students will be placed into three cohorts, PreK, K-3 and 4-5. Maximum enrollments on each After-School team will be necessary to maintain distancing requirements. The maximum enrollment in PreK is 8 students, and 10 students each on the K-3 and 4/5 teams. Homework club will not be offered this year as it would necessitate the mixing of students across teams. We will use the first part of After-School to allow students to work quietly on homework.

Please register following the links below.

We strongly encourage families to pick up their child(ren) at the prescribed dismissal time and not use After-School unless necessary. Having After-School care, although necessary, does impact the "team" approach we have developed during the school day. We know this may be a burden but it will help increase the likelihood of students being able to attend school in person. Thank you for your understanding as we work to keep our students and staff safe.
Are you Interested in Helping?

Many of you have asked about ways to support our teachers as we head back to school this year. Our "Team" model that we have developed to keep our students and teachers safe and physically separated in the building means that each "Team" needs their own pool of subs to rely on to make sure we can keep our community as safe as possible. We are hoping to develop a robust list of parents who might be willing to step in (we promise we won't make you!) if a teacher needs to be out in a pinch. Rather than calling in subs from outside of our community, this allows teachers the piece of mind to know that an absence doesn't increase risk for their Team. If you may have some flexibility in your schedule and might be available as a back-up sub ONLY for your child's team and ONLY in non COVID-19 situations, please contact Mr. Orlando. Thanks!

  • Virginia also launched a new application called COVIDWISE. It is the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) COVID-19 exposure notification app to facilitate contact tracing in response to the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

  • COVID-19 Weekly Metrics: The seven day moving average(combined and scaled for Charlottesville City/Albemarle County) is 8 cases/100K and a PCR positivity of 5.3%.
