Invitation to the 2020 Ohio State Organization
Executive Board Meeting
Believe   in the countless  opportunities  Delta Kappa Gamma has to offer.   Belong  not just as a member, but actively participate with bold commitment and determination to  build   Ohio’s future.   Producer and screenwriter, Eric Roth (famously known for Forrest Gump) once said, “Our lives are defined by  opportunities , even the ones we miss.”   Have you ever attended an OSO State Executive Board Meeting?  If not, the above invitation is your perfect  opportunity  to attend, hassle free, the August 29, 2020, Executive Board Meeting.  Simply come as you are…no traveling or expenses involved…from the comfort of your own home, your own “easy chair,” and “Zoom” in on your own personal computer/i pad/phone.  What better way to learn more about your DKG/Ohio State Organization than to take advantage of this  opportunity  to “tune in?”  As H. Jackson Brown, Jr. (best known for his  Life’s Little Instruction  books) reminds us, “Nothing is more costly than a missed  opportunity , let’s not let this one slip through our hands.”

Looking forward to seeing you …all of you!

Time to Make Lemonade!
We have all heard the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”  It seems this is where we are with the business of DKG Ohio.  As much as we planned, prepared, and wanted a state convention in 2020, it did not happen.  As much as we want to gather with our chapter and state members face-to-face, that is not going to happen either.

Although there are many things we are not able to do right now, these restrictions have provided opportunities for us to “think outside the box.”  That is where those in DKG leadership positions throughout Ohio have turned their attention.  President Diana Kirkpatrick has created a Connectivity Team to reach out to our members in an effort to stay connected with one another at both the chapter and state levels.  This team has planned two events for the month of August using Zoom.  An evening of BINGO will be coordinated by Katie Gantz, Gamma Phi chapter, to provide a fun time with members throughout the state and the second event will be an “OSO Conversation Jar” discussion led by Ann Todd, Zeta chapter, to address a variety of current educational topics.

The Connectivity Team is considering other Zoom activities for the future, such as: book reviews, cooking demonstrations, Show and Tell, movie reviews, guest speakers, “A Poem in my Pocket, arts and crafts, and much, much more.  In this issue of The Voice, you will find more information about these outreach activities and other important Zoom events.

Mark the following dates on your calendar:
  • August 4, ADSOEF Annual Meeting, 3:00-4:00 p.m.
  • August 6, BINGO, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
  • August 18, OSO Conversation Jar Discussion, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
  • August 29, Executive Board Meeting, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

These events are open to one and all, but it is   very important   that you register for each individual event in order   to receive the link via email to participate.   Only ninety-nine spots are available for each Zoom session.

As we all make adjustments to how we manage our days, rest assured that plans are being made for the April 9-11, 2021, DKG Ohio State Convention.  We don’t know what that will look like at this point, but there are many outstanding topics and presenters we are planning to share with you, one way or another, but for now, make a phone call to a DKG friend and together enjoy the sunshine with a cold glass of lemonade!!

ADSOEF Annual Meeting Details
Dear Ohio DKG Sister,

YOU are ADSOEF!

Every one of you, from the newly inducted key woman educator to those who have been DKG Sisters for thirty years or more ... you are all invited to the third Annual Meeting of Alpha Delta State Ohio Educational Foundation on August 4, 2020, at 3 p.m. through the miracle of twenty- first century technology – Zoom. The very pandemic that closed the door to the possibility of a face-to-face meeting has opened a much bigger window allowing more sisters to attend.

So, why should you want to attend?  The simplest response is, why not? You can do it with an internet connection and computer, tablet, or smartphone. You’ll get to see your friends, and it is becoming the new normal!

The more detailed response is that you will want to attend in order to...

Be informed
  • Learn about “The State of your Educational Foundation” where money came from and where it went in 2019-2020 ...where we are now.
  • Understand how you and your Foundation are funding the future of excellence in education.

Exercise your voice; vote on business matters
  • Discuss the implications of the Board revised Bylaws.
  • Vote to adopt the 2020-2021 ADSOEF Budget.
  • Ask questions and get answers.

Be inspired
  • Meet your Nominating Committee and consider the possibilities for service...
  • Gather facts that will help you to help yourself or others in their educational journeys.

EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE
“Let’s Celebrate, Ten Years of Progress and Success
Delta Kappa Society International and
“Schools for Africa”/UNICEF”

The 2020 Delta Kappa Society International Convention in July was a virtual experience that I attended on my Surface tablet from the office in my home. I listened to many inspiring reports given by Whitney Simon, Manager of the UNICEF USA Global Cause Partnership Team.

The summary of her reports concluded that over the last ten years we’ve had exciting progress working together including….
  • expanding using the sustainability approach to access early learning education opportunities
  • provided quality education for students who are primary school leveled
  • resources that are age/developmentally appropriate, learning techniques provided to educators, medical/health and nutrition programs
  • successes for the adolescence community - youth gained knowledge to equip them with skills for when they become adults
  • inclusivity and equity with those individuals who are the most vulnerable experiencing challenges with disabilities and disadvantages; then focused on ways to remove those barriers.

We also celebrated  the financial impact of our partnership with UNICEF. Here are some of the items that may have been provided by your financial support to children/youth over the last ten years which includes.…
  • over 8000 desks
  • 135,000 early childhood development training opportunities for parents and care providers
  • over 15,000 youth were able to participate in missed classes that were needed for them to complete to be eligible to graduate with their peers
  • empowers/equips teachers with necessary training to be able to support/instruct their students in different types of learning environments in order to meet the needs of students.

As we commemorate the last ten years of successfully working together with our DKG and Schools for Africa/UNICEF partnership, let’s continue to provide our financial support as we begin the next decade that will impact children/youth around the world.
