Odette Cook visits our Middle School

We were so honored to host Odette Cook today. Odette was born in Paris, France in 1933, the youngest of three children born to Hungarian Jews, who had emigrated to Paris in 1925. When the German Army invaded France in June of 1940, her family found it increasingly difficult to survive on the few rations that Jews were allowed to buy. In 1943, after her father was sent to a slave labor camp in Austria, her mother traveled 150 miles outside of Paris with her three children to place them with a family there, where they would be safe from persecution. Odette and her two siblings were left with a Christian family who gave them new identities to shelter them from the Nazi soldiers, who roamed the area in search of Jews. Her mother returned to Paris to care for her aging parents and to work with the French Resistance in saving other Jews from deportation. When the war ended in 1945, Odette’s mother returned to retrieve her three children and bring them back to Paris. It was in July 1945 that Odette saw her father again when the Red Cross brought him back to Paris after the liberation of his camp. While her immediate family all survived the Nazi occupation, Odette lost 26 extended family members at Auschwitz. She now speaks of her experiences to school groups in the hope that educating the next generation of children will encourage them to build and participate in a more peaceful world. This was a special opportunity for our students.

Peabody Steps up to Help our Community!

Shoe Drive
Hooray! The Shoes for the Homeless shoe drive was a huge success due to the generosity and support of many of our families. Peabody collected over 100 pairs of new and used shoes of various sizes and styles. This donation will add to the more than 100,000 shoes that have been donated to the shoe drive over the past 30 years! Shoes were distributed on Saturday, February 8 at the Salvation Army gym.
Thank you again for your dedication to improving the lives of those in need.

Food Drive
Thank you to the entire Peabody community for making our Hope for Hunger food drive a huge success! All food donations will feed clients served by 45 of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank’s (BRAFB) partner pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in the Thomas Jefferson area. This includes the city of Charlottesville, and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Greene, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock. The Hope for Hunger food drive was organized by Ronak, Ellena, Lila, Miles, Miranda, Sahalia, and Kes. We are excited to announce that Peabody surpassed the goal of collecting 250 items and donated 362 pounds of food which will provide approximately 302 meals for families in our area! In addition, the food drive received $140.10 in monetary donations, including a $50.00 gift card from Wegmans. Student government graciously and generously volunteered to match these funds with a $140.00 contribution of their own to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Thank you to the Peabody community for coming together to support the Hope for Hunger food drive. Thank you to the Hunger class for your hard work and dedication and for helping spread the word about hunger in our area.

Thank you to Ms. Wynn for providing these opportunities to our kids and community!
Game Night!

The 16th annual Peabody Game Night is right around the corner - and it's shaping up to be our most exciting one yet! This year's Game Night is March 6th from 6:30PM-8:00PM.

It takes a small army of volunteers to make Game Night fun and successful. We want to thank you immensely for your willingness to be a Game Master and to assist with setup and cleanup.  Please consider signing up to help setup and/or cleanup or to run a game table!

If you're signing up to be a Game Master, please select a game from the list (please let us know if you'll need us to provide the game or if you can bring your own) OR choose a slot to Bring Your Own! and add your game's name in the comments.

If you're signing up to help with setup or cleanup, please note that both of these jobs involve heavy lifting and carrying of tables and chairs, so it's not ideal for anyone with back issues or other injuries.

Please contact Shannon Walsh if you have questions or need assistance with the signup. Thank you!

Peabody Book Swap!

Have your children outgrown books from your home libraries? Please consider donating them to the upcoming book swap that will be paired with Game Night (3/6). We will return to our treasured Bookworm Central book fair next year when we have a fabulous new library, but until then we want to make sure our readers have access to lots of new material!

We are accepting children's books in good condition that are appropriate for our PreK-8 students. Drop them off in the office to the attention of Ms. MaryBeth or Mrs. Funk and thank you for supporting Peabody's voracious readers!
