Happy Mother's Day
Yesterday was Mother's Day, and I hope all of you moms out there had a beautiful, wonderful day. Thank you for your love and for everything you have done to help us learn, support our dreams and enrich our lives.
Whether our moms are here with us or are only with us in spirit, they are always in our hearts and continue to shape our lives. My mother passed away in 2008 at 99 years old, and I know she is up there looking out for me. I still talk to her. Bless her and all the moms who always do so much for their families.

Those of you who have spent time with me know that I love to tell jokes and kid around. I tend to see the humorous and fun side of life, and I think it’s safe to say that my twin, Danny, and my older siblings are partly responsible for my comical ways. You could say that I came into this world destined to be a jokester.
Where we were born (in the rural New Mexico village of Nambe), women stayed at home to give birth with the help of a midwife. They rarely had any kind of pre-natal care, so nobody knew the gender of the baby or even the number of babies! When they delivered, there weren’t any cell phones (or really any phones) to call the husband with news of the new arrival. My dad worked at the labs in Los Alamos – on the Manhattan Project – and in those days the father rarely if ever stayed at home to witness a birth. So, on a hot July morning, dad headed off to work as usual. My mom went into labor that afternoon, and to everyone’s surprise, not one but TWO baby boys arrived! Danny first and then me. I like to think that I pushed him out first to see if the coast was clear…
My older siblings were delighted by the surprise, and they cooked up a scheme to trick my dad. I can only imagine the scene…
giggling among themselves, they hid me in the closet
.
When dad came home, the family presented him with Danny. He was proud and fawned over his newborn son, and then the family sat down to eat. At some point between the tamales and dessert, my older brother sneaked back to the closet and brought me to the table in quite a dramatic fashion! Naturally, dad was stunned and speechless, and they just laughed and laughed because the look on his face was hilarious as he stared at two baby boys.
My parents were so happy to have twins and dressed us in identical clothing even though we are not identical twins. We played together and had the same friends until I got run over by a car when I was six years old (in case you missed that story, you can read about it
here
). I stayed at home recuperating for about a year, and Danny – who was smart enough to get out of the way when the car rolled down the hill – advanced a year in front of me at school.
But before that, when we were five years old, we went to school together for a year. I will NEVER forget our first day of school. We grew up in Nambe, but dad was working at the labs in Los Alamos and decided the commute was too far. We got a home in town where we stayed during the week, and we went to Nambe on the weekends. That meant school at Los Alamos.
Danny and I were terrified. Neither of us spoke a word of English, and we were standing there surrounded by kids we didn't know speaking a language we didn't understand. We didn't want to be there. I don't know who suggested it, but
we took off and hid in the forest all day!
It got dark eventually. We were hungry and scared, so we finally made our way back home. We got in a lot of trouble for that stunt, I can assure you.
Things got better as we got older. We worked hard, but we had fun growing up and have great memories of Los Alamos, going to school and the friends we made. Today we still love to hang out, fish and tell stories about our childhood.

We have been visiting Taos in the fall every year since the late 1990s and have been fans of Ed Sandoval for many years.
We were drawn to his art and his personality after admiring his work, purchasing a print, seeing him paint in public and watching him ride his horse in a Taos Fiesta parade one July while dressed as Zorro.
We were hanging out in the lobby of the Taos Inn late one afternoon when he came in to place his plaque as a recipient of the 2012 Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in one of the display cases. We bought him a beer, shared some nachos and felt even more connected to him.
Over the years we bought t-shirts, calendars, a giclee, and a minimalist painting he did at a 2014 Quick Draw event that we gave to a close friend as a retirement gift, always saying that “someday” we would buy one of his full-sized original paintings.
Late last September, we visited with Ed and went to the Fall Arts Exhibit to see some of his latest works. We saw his painting titled “After the Rain” and that is when we knew that “someday” had arrived. A month later, we decided to purchase the painting and are so happy we did! Everyone who comes into our house is just as mesmerized by it as we are.
Now we have a dream to “someday” buy another one of Ed’s paintings, but we will need to rearrange the furniture to make room for it!
