This Successful Solutions issue focuses on trainings for managers
COVID-19 Update: Doing Business Virtually

The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting all organizations, no matter their size and location. Many organizations are now re-assessing their use of in-person meetings and events and considering virtual meet-ups.

ODLS has resources to develop and deliver virtual training sessions and meetings. We have helped many of our clients not only create custom e-learning modules but also to transfer existing classroom-based training into e-learning modules.

During this time of great upheaval, many of our clients are coming to us with requests to provide virtual training sessions with little preparation time and/or limited budgets. We would like to let our past, present and potential future clients know that should you have the need for immediate assistance with deploying virtual learning or meetings,  please contact us

We will do our best to help provide a solution.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled spring newsletter.

Director's Greetings

Spring is here and many will undertake the annual ritual of "Spring Cleaning". As we prioritize what to clean out or spruce up at home, we should also consider "cleaning up" our training curricula at work.

As human resources professionals, many of us are involved in deciding what training is offered to our employees and managers. We all understand the importance of building the core competencies of our managers such as coaching, communicating, providing feedback or managing performance. Yet, when was the last time you objectively reviewed your management development curriculum? Are you offering trainings that your managers agree align with their priority development needs? Do your trainings include current best practices, like managing remote employees? Are the training sessions utilizing a blended-learning approach that leverages pre-work, integrates online skills assessments or offer post-session webinars to support the application of learnings?

This issue focuses on best practices for the design and delivery of management development training curricula. Our first Client Spotlight features the Massachusetts Division of Banks, for which we designed a highly customized training series for their entire management team. We also feature an upcoming two-day leadership development program which we will be delivering for the American Association of Residential Mortgage Regulators. Our Recommended Vendor is Star 360, which offers easily customizable online 360-degree assessments . Our Staff Spotlight features a contract senior consultant and executive coach who also happens to be our past (semi-retired) executive director of the UMass Donahue Institute - Lynn Griesemer. Lastly, our Tips article focuses on 10 best practices for building a world-class management development curriculum.

This learning series is paired with reflection questions and learning assignments designed to further support skill development and behavior change.

The link below offers a suggested delivery sequence in Learning Series 1 and 2. Alternatively, each session can be offered independently. These modules can be delivered in half-day or full-day sessions depending on the level and number of activities.

Top 10 Tips for Developing an Impactful Management Development Curriculumtoptentips

Designing and developing an entire management development curriculum is daunting to undertake. First you must address:
  • Who is the target audience? (e.g., new managers, mid managers, senior level executives; etc.)
  • What is the focus of the training curriculum? Is the goal to develop specific competencies for the target audience?
  • When will the training be delivered? Will it be delivered multiple times? Does it need to be spread out over months or offered in short sessions to accommodate the manager's schedules?
  • Why is this training curriculum needed at this time?
  • How should this training be delivered for this target audience? Where are they located?
However, anyone who has designed training curricula knows that the answers to these seemingly simple questions can be very complex. Since every group of managers in every organization has unique challenges and development needs, that means that no two manager development curricula are exactly the same.
