A Voice for the Students

The Engineering Student Government (ESG) serves our North Campus community in various ways. From running cool events like our upcoming "Valentine's Day Cookie Decorating" to solving significant issues within North Campus' such as setting up more compost bins, ESG deeply cares about your voice and wellbeing. At its core, our mission is to provide our students a platform to strive for and freely express change. Are you in the College of Engineering? Would you like a support system that will aid you in your drive for a positive college experience? Connect with us through our events, members, and social media! This month's newsletter will shed light on how ESG contributes to the engineering community, but more importantly, how you can  make an impact through our resources and support.

Engineering Student Government has given me the tools and support to improve upon the College of Engineering to ensure all students find it home like I do. I have served as a senator for one year and was recently appointed as the Student Life Committee Co-Chair, where I am eager to assist our members in their initiatives and plan great events for the College of Engineering students. My personal initiative is the pilot of a mentorship program where students are matched based on a more holistic criteria rather than solely academics. With the positive feedback thus far, I hope to continue this program in future years as well! ESG is a strong support system for accomplishing personal goals and I am grateful for that. I am excited to keep planning events so ESG can make a difference for the students!

   Funding Committee

The Funding Committee reviews grant requests from student organizations and project teams across the University of Michigan, in an effort to support amazing events, initiatives, and opportunities for our student body. We are well into the review process for this semester, having already given away over $7,000 to worthy causes since the new year. We also recently completed the Fall 2019 Funding Report, an overview of ESG's financial operations last semester. If you or your organization need financial support for a great new project, we encourage you to visit https://esg.engin.umich.edu/funding for more information!

Sustainability Committee

The Sustainability Committee promotes awareness and adoption of sustainable practices across the College of Engineering. Our latest initiatives include reusable container programs, energy efficiency, water bottle filling stations, and an expansion of composting on North Campus. We are also investigating developing a space devoted to sustainability on North Campus, similar in character to the DANA building on Central campus. Finally, our committee will be hosting a SUSTAINABILITY MOVIE AND SPEAKER event on sustainable food choices on Friday, March 13th, 4-6 pm in 1180 Duderstadt.

Diversity Equity & Inclusion Committee

The DEI committee promotes inclusivity across the College of Engineering and makes sure everyone is treated equally, fairly, and is considered a part of the Engineering community. We are excited to announce that new flags are up now at Pierpont Commons! If you are passing through Pierpont and are entering the Dude Connector, or even passing from the Dude Connector to Pierpont, make sure you look up and you'll see fresh, newly added flags for more countries. Do remember that you will find flags for only those countries that are represented by at least two students who have attended or currently attend the University of Michigan, per the data provided by the Office of the Registrar.
