HP Arts funding touches all students in HPISD. During the 2019-2020 school year, HP Arts underwrote $50,000 in teacher requests for arts programming, technology, equipment, instruments, and more. A few highlights include HPMS pottery wheels, Djembe drums at Armstrong Elementary, a HPHS debate team consultant, and Latin dance instruction for 6th Grade Social Studies classes. Linda Raya Scholarship Winner, Julia Cary
Congratulations to the 2020 Linda Raya Scholarship winner, Julia Cary! Her extensive portfolio includes charcoal, various paints, resin, colored pencils and more. She's experienced in landscapes, portraiture, and impressionism; her hobby turned into more when she began doing commission work as early as her freshman year at HPHS. Julia plans to study art and architecture in college and will be attending Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Poland once travel restrictions are lifted. Until then, Julia is spending time in Austin pursing her craft.

Arts Advocate, Sharon Pittman
Mrs. Pittman is a HPISD grandmother and volunteered her time and talents exclusively to the UP Art Room every day for over a year. She tirelessly helped Mrs. Torres with any and all projects, lessons, and tasks. Mrs. Pittman has been an invaluable volunteer for the UP Art Program and well deserving recipient of the Arts Advocate Award.

Arts in Education Teacher Award, Samuel Standridge
In this third year at HPHS, Mr. Standridge taught English II and English II Pre-AP TAG. His sophomore-year film project wove fine arts into his English literature curriculum. Students were pushed to not only explore the story meanings of two films but also critique the visual elements of scenes, sequence, and music. Students also had the option to write, direct and shoot their own short films. Mr. Standridge encouraged students to look beyond literature to discover the art of cinema and to study the genre of the visual arts in a new way making him worthy of the Arts in Education Teacher Award.

Fine Arts Teacher of the Year, Heather Smith
Ms. Smith makes all students feel like "artists." She supports her students with their artistic endeavors and appreciates each as individuals. She provides a safe space for creating and for just being themselves. This past Spring was Ms. Smith's fifth year teaching at HPHS. HP Arts honored her innovation in the classroom and drive to enrich her students' lives with the inaugural HP Arts Fine Arts Teacher of the Year Award.

Explore Fiber at HP Elementary Schools
Explore Fiber is an organization with the mission of showcasing and exploring fiber as a fine art material. The visiting artist, Christine Miller, is a nationally recognized art educator and a lifetime fiber artist. HP 3rd grade students learned about the importance of fibers in their daily lives as well as the possibilities of fiber as an art material. The lesson culminated in the creation of a wet felting fiber art project using wool fibers to create a felted cloth.

HPMS Orchestra Clinicians
Clinicians Sadarius Slaughter, Orchestra Director, McMillian Jr. High, Wylie ISD, and Brian Eaton, Orchestra Director, Clark High School, Plano ISD, helped the HPMS Philharmonic and Honors orchestras prepare for UIL. These clinicians are professional masters in the field of orchestra and certified to provide relevant feedback that is crucial to success at state contests.

MIS / HPMS Photography Display Frames
HP Arts purchased frames for McCulloch Intermediate and Highland Park Middle School so that the hallways could display some of the beautiful photography created by students. Photography students capture the images and edit them before selecting their favorites to frame and display for all to enjoy.

Authors Visits
Two authors visited three different HP schools to share about the writing process and their love of books. Stacy McAnulty presented to McCulloch Intermediate and Armstrong Elementary students and Victoria Coe spoke with students at University Park Elementary.

Senior Choir Students Perform at Graduation
Students not only kept learning during online learning this past spring, but the fine arts students kept rehearsing - remotely of course. Seniors worked hard to practice and to record a wonderful rendition of the HPHS alma mater that was played at the beginning of the Class of 2020's graduation ceremony.

Highlander Band & Highland Bells Fall Preview Show
Students at HPHS have been hard at work for months preparing shows for the fall season. On September 25th students, parents, and community members enjoyed socially distanced performances at Highlander Stadium.

"Take A Seat" Funds at Work
|

HP Arts is excited to announce that Take-A-Seat's funds were used over the summer of 2020 to assist in the purchase of a new and much needed sound system for the HPHS Palmer Auditorium.
Tyler Perring, HPHS Technical Director, is delighted with the new state-of-the art system. Mr. Perring stated, "The purchase of this new system brings advanced theatre sound technology into the building making sure our performers have the best possible equipment to work with and giving our technicians the opportunity to train on equipment they will see in the future. The auditorium is one of the most used spaces in the district and this new equipment will upgrade everyone who uses the auditorium's experience."
If you would like to support HP Arts through the Take-a-Seat program, please contact [email protected]. Your $500 donation will honor your child, family member, a favorite teacher or HPISD organization in the HPHS Palmer Auditorium. Funds raised are used for ongoing improvements in the auditorium areas.

The HP Arts Program, "Play It Again, Sam!" is designed to recycle instruments from the community back into the school music programs. The instruments are considered a donation to HP Arts and are eligible for a tax-deductible contribution.

Dear HP Arts Patrons,
As we enter this unprecedented school year, I would like to thank each of you that donated to our organization during Back-to-School-Sign-Up and on North Texas Giving Day. We at HP Arts know there are many worthy organizations in need of assistance these days and we are grateful you chose to support us. With your help and a generous grant from our cornerstone benefactor, La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas, HP funds arts enrichment, programs, equipment, and instruction for students in every grade throughout HPISD.
The 2019-2020 school year did not end as anyone expected. There was an abundance of missed performances, competitions, and celebrations. Many of HP Arts' spring and summer teacher requests were cancelled or put on hold indefinitely. We expect this new school year to continue to bring changes to our daily lives, as well as to fine arts classrooms and arts programming. HP Arts is working hard to be flexible in our approach and in our support of arts enrichment. This year is sure to look different than any year before.
For over 30 years HP Arts has been supporting the arts within HPISD. The organization was founded on the principle that arts education plays a vital role in the overall development and academic success of our students. A pandemic does not change our belief and HP Arts remains committed to helping enrich our student's lives through the arts. HPISD is fortunate to have a faculty of dedicated, passionate educators, supportive community members and parents, and unbelievably talented students. HP Arts cannot wait to see what creative ways HPISD will find to celebrate, express, and promote the arts this year.

Being a volunteer for an organization like HP Arts takes a lot of work. Compensation comes from enriching our children's education and the opportunity to work and collaborate with like-minded parents. In 2020, we had 10 board members who completed their three year commitment and several others who needed to step away because of relocating or other commitments.
