FROM THE PASTOR

Rev. Rebekah Abel Lamar

"Life's most persistent

and urgent question is,

'What are you doing for others?''

Martin Luther King, Jr. said these words to an audience in Montgomery in 1957, the year after the Montgomery bus boycott came to an end. The persistency and urgency of this question is timeless. There is always need, and we are always called to care for others. The way we "do for others" should always be thoughtful and humble. Jesus told us that whenever we offer food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, clothes to the naked, welcome to the stranger, or visitation to the imprisoned, we do these things to Jesus. This Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend perhaps this question will help us to bridge divides, right wrongs, seek justice, and offer compassion just as it did over 60 years ago.

Grace & Peace,

Rebekah

Opportunities for Service

Please remember the people our church is serving and those who work with them daily in your prayers.

Cold Weather Clothing Donations

During the month of January, we will be collecting gently worn cold weather clothing items for men. women, and children - such as coats, hats, gloves, scarves. Also, socks are a much needed item for those in shelters. These items will be given to various agencies that distribute clothing to those who are homeless or are in need. There is a box designated for these donations at the Jackson Street entrance.

Mobile Baykeeper Clean-up Project

January 15, 2022

On Saturday, Mobile Baykeeper will host a clean-up project on Springhill Ave. between Broad St. and St. Stephens Rd. from 8:30 - 11:00 a.m. If you wish to volunteer, please visit their website to register.

PB&J for Meals on Wheels

Our 45 Meals on Wheels recipients get a sandwich bag each day, along with their hot meal. The bag has a sandwich and a snack. Peanut butter and jelly is often on the menu. During the month of November, we are asking for donations of creamy peanut butter and grape jelly to help fill the pantry for the remainder of the year. There is a donation box in the Jackson Street entrance for these donations.

McKemie Place

GSPC has agreed to provide lunch for up to 40 residents at McKemie Place on the second Friday of each month. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered for this mission over the last three months and into 2022. Due to its funding situation, the agency depends on volunteers to provide both lunch and dinner for the residents. They are looking to find individuals or groups that would be willing to provide a lunch or dinner meal on a regular basis each month. They are especially in need of volunteers to provide lunch meals. So, if you, as an individual, or are a member of a group that might be interested in providing this on a regular basis, please contact them at 251-287-2225.

Barton Academy for Advanced World Studies

How Can You Support Barton Academy?

Mobile Area Interfaith Conference (MAIC) is a non-profit agency which provides services for inmates in Metro Jail and released inmates returning to the community. This agency was formerly known as the Council of Downtown Churches, of which GSPC was a major participant. They currently have an urgent need for white underwear (See details in the listing below) and used glasses. Below is a list of needed items:

  • personal hygiene products for men and women to include full size shampoo and conditioner (must be able to see through the containers), full size deodorant (no roller balls), full size soap, full size toothpaste, white cotton socks (no anklet style);
