October 27th is our Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) service. This is an opportunity to remember the good qualities and memories of our loved ones who have died. Please feel free to bring in photos of people in your lives who have died—with just that person in the photo—to add to our altar. You will have an opportunity to share something positive about that person with a small group during the service.

Earth Justice Ministry will hold its next regular meeting on Sunday, November 8, 2019 in Annex G at about 12:30, after second service. Visitors are welcome and refreshments are served. Please come to hear a report about legislation about about International Climate Accountability (# S1743) and about Ecological Water that will be sponsored in the upcoming months.

: Carol Manetta is looking for volunteers to help with a cooperative non-profit, for which she is the Executive Director. She needs helpers for the website, writers on social media (Linked-in), and fundraisers. The project is in on land in Tombstone building a food forest and swales to capture rain and involves seven universities across the nation. Join the Inclusion Team!
The Inclusion Team is a group of UUCP members helping us live into our vision of a “radically inclusive” spiritual community. Last year, the team started an ongoing discussion about gender identity and how we can better welcome members/friends who are trans, nonbinary, and/or gender-nonconforming. We considered the results of a member survey, invited the Transforming Hearts Collective to advise us and lead a Sunday service, and created prototypes for new bathroom signs. These prototypes will soon be replaced with permanent versions designed by our own Katie Quinn!
Currently, we are learning about UUCP members' experiences with neurodiversity and mental health, and exploring ways to more fully welcome people with those experiences. Working with Rev. Christine and our amazing staff, we are taking suggestions from adults and children on the autism spectrum and their allies, as well as those who live with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and other mental health challenges. Later this year, we anticipate offering panel discussions with members with these lived experiences, educational resources on these topics, support groups, and possibly Sunday service experiences.

Trust and Estate Planning Workshop

We can agree that
adulting
is not all fun and games. We can also agree that it is never too soon to plan for your family's future. With that in mind, the UU Foundation Board invites you a Trust and Estate Planning Workshop on the morning of Saturday, October 26th at 9 am in the Johnson Room. The session will run about an hour and a half. Refreshments and childcare will be provided.

With a record turnout of 30 people at the cookout, 22 people on the hike, including 5 children, and 5 dogs, the weekend in Flagstaff was declared a success by all. The weather was picture perfect. Flagstaff has the bluest sky on the planet! The aspens were in their full fall glory. The daytime temperatures don’t get any better, and the nighttime temperatures were not as cold as everyone expected.
The next hike is going to be a grand one as well. On October 26, Phil Slater and Dan Hunn are leading a very popular hike to Horton Springs. Fall colors should be at their showy best. Plan on joining us for a beautiful morning of hiking followed by lunch together in the picnic area after the hike. Click on the link below to get the full details on the hike.

from 9am-12pm. Ideally, participants will be there for both sessions. It will be an excellent opportunity to meet others who are new or re-joining UUCP as well as learning more about Unitarian Universalism, UUCP, our organization and structure. UUCP Memorial Garden and Trail Beautification Day
|
November 2, 2019 8:00 am (coffee and pastries available at 7:30 in the Johnson Room)
Spend Saturday morning with fellow UUs clearing brush, trimming trees, and planting in the memorial garden and on our trail system below it. Bring your garden tools (saws, chain saws, rakes, hoes, clippers, gloves, hats) and discover the beauty of our campus.

Dinner and the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra - Saturday, November 9th
|
Join us for dinner and a performance of City Music, written by UUCP’s own Glenn Stallcop. Glenn has been the double bassist for the Phoenix Symphony for 46 years and retired this year. Come support him as the Symphony honors him playing one of his orchestral works entitled City Music along with Beethoven's Mass in C. We will be meeting downtown for dinner at 5:30 and the performance is at 7:30. Each person will be responsible for getting their own tickets. Email Anne Lackey at

Doors open at 6 pm for socializing in the Sanctuary; Dance Fun starts at 6:30 pm, to 8:30 pm.
Peg Hesley, professional caller with Jeff Thorn, fiddler, will teach and call our gender-free dance.
Suggested donation of $5.00 per person. Complimentary childcare available for the youngest.
Wear comfy clothes for moving. Close-toed shoes suggested. Bring your water bottle, and optionally, a finger food snack to share the mid-dance refreshment refreshment break.

The biggest question I hear when I travel around the state to UU communities is: "What can I do?" As Unitarian Universalists, we are called to live our values into the world. We don't just talk, or pray, or learn about issues... we ACT. We know that when Dr. Cornell West said "Never forget that justice is what love looks like in public" he was calling us to use our voices and hands and bodies and time and resources for human rights in our communities, and our world.
I wanted to ask if your heart is called to the following opportunities for engaging with justice for asylum seekers and migrant families.
Do you have a Saturday or Sunday morning, once a month or less, to visit Eloy detention center? In partnersip with Puente Human Rights Movement, UUJAZ will visit detainees in Eloy to gather their stories and connect them with resources. Email Janine to be notified of the dates.
Do you like to do research on the internet? There are several opportunities to spend a few hours online to help fact-find for justice groups, before November 1st. This can be done from anywhere in the state! Let Janine know if this sounds like the justice work for you.
Are you open to spend a couple hours occasionally at the new Phoenix Welcome Center? Phoenix Restoration Project is holding a mandatory volunteer training THIS Saturday, October 19th, 1-3:30.

Are you available on a very occasional weekday to attend court alongside an asylum seeker? UUJAZ is starting an exciting new partnership with groups across the state for a court accompaniment network to provide advocacy and support.

The Sanctuary Art Team is looking ahead to the coming Holiday Season and would like to include decorations that are personal to you. Whether you decorate for the holidays with wreaths, menorahs, candle arcs, spider webs or Krampus masks we would like to show it. Have you noticed that some members have blue, yellow, or purple ribbons attached to their name tags?
These ribbons, which may say Theological Diversity, Radical Inclusion, or Justice Centered, are areas of personal study available to us in the form of on-demand classes, books, articles, videos, podcasts, social media, and other ways to reflect and discuss each topic. UUCP is in the process of organizing this program for fall 2019. Sign up to get a ribbon and be contacted about classes at a table in the back of the Sanctuary before and after each Sunday Service.
