Fifty-One Celebrated During Sherman College's First Virtual Commencement Fifty-one students from around the world celebrated their graduation from Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC, on Saturday, September 19, 2020, during the college’s first ever virtual commencement ceremony. The 137th commencement was a shared ceremony for June and September 2020 graduates. The program premiered on the college’s Facebook and YouTube platforms and featured award presentations, speeches, and a photo presentation of the graduates.   Vice President for Student Affairs LaShanda Hutto Harris, MSW, said because the college was unable to host a traditional ceremony, it sought to use the digital format to its benefit, creating a personalized program. “We were able to provide a more intimate ceremony with personal touches,” she shared. “Students participated in the production by submitting photos to be premiered in the graduate presentation, and our elected student announcer, Cid Marie Correa Irizarry, read the names of her classmates during the program.” Sherman College Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences Terry E. Mary Black Foundation Awards Sherman College $15,000 Grant The Mary Black Foundation recently awarded new grants to 19 nonprofit organizations serving Spartanburg County, including a $15,000 grant to Sherman College of Chiropractic to support the Chiropractic Health Center, which provides chiropractic care for the local community. This is Sherman College’s first time receiving a grant from the Mary Black Foundation. The Foundation’s most recent grant cycle focused on the systemic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically the basic needs of individuals and nonprofits, mental health, and the growing health and education lag. “With support from the Mary Black Foundation, we can continue to promote a more healthy and vibrant community through chiropractic care,” said Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Public Relations Ohmar T. Land, D.M. “During these challenging times and beyond, it is a top priority for Sherman College to build more strategic relationships throughout Spartanburg to share our resources and services. We are grateful for the support the Foundation has provided to our Health Center and for their confidence in us as we continue to care for our community.” Read more on our blog.

ROAR Doctor Spotlight: Drs. Mike Williams and Chris Brown With a clear mission of helping patients and their families “live a healthier life today and for the rest of your life,” ROAR doctors Mike Williams and Chris Brown bring chiropractic care to the cities of Abingdon, Richland, and North Tazewell in Virginia. The Sherman College Reach Out and Recruit (ROAR) Program is designed to mentor and inspire the next generation of chiropractors. Dr. Mike Williams, a recent Sherman College graduate, is still very passionate about his alma mater. While a student at Sherman, he served as an ambassador, participating in many recruiting events. In 2017, the college named him ROAR Student Leader of the Year. Dr. Chris Brown is a Palmer College alumnus who holds certifications in sports chiropractic and several other areas. Because Dr. Williams and Dr. Brown enthusiastically teach the science, art, and philosophy of chiropractic to their patients, many of them have been inspired to become chiropractors themselves. “We want to thank Dr. Williams and Dr. Brown for all they do for the present and future of our beloved profession,” said Dr. Jorge Campos, director of the ROAR program. “Their office is one of the top chiropractic student referral offices in the country, and we thank them for entrusting us with their future students. We will make sure they have an amazing experience.”

Lyceum Theme Announced, Registration Now Open Sherman College’s Continuing Education Department is proud to announce that the theme of Lyceum 2021 will be “Time to Shine.” This theme highlights the idea that the world is waiting for the care provided by chiropractors to change the health of their communities following the unrest caused by a pandemic. This three-day event will take place on Sherman College’s beautiful campus April 29 - May 1, 2021. Registration is open, and details are posted at www.sherman.edu/lyceum.

Summer Practice Management Elective a Success Sherman College’s Practice Management Observational Elective (PMOE) program again proved successful in summer quarter, with 13 students participating and observing more than 15,000 patient encounters collectively. During their weekly assignments and accountability phone call with Instructor of Clinical Sciences Heath Treharne, M.S., D.C., students were able to share their “wow” moments and insights in how each office worked and how that structure might reflect on their future practices. By sharing as a class, participating students were able to live vicariously through one another to share the experience. Because the PMOE course focuses on business rather than patient care, students can see every aspect of how a practice runs and operates, and they work with successful doctors in the field. When reflecting on their time at their selected sites, here are some of the words and phrases students shared to describe the program’s benefits: eye-opening, overcoming many unknowns, opportunity, efficiency, learning to care. One student even reported, “Got a job!” An increasing number of students have expressed interest in the PMOE program, and fall quarter has 21 students requesting participation. Even through a world-wide pandemic, Sherman College is making a way for these students to gain such a great experience to better them for the years ahead. Sustaining Star Spotlight: Dr. Gabriel O'Sullivan, ’01 Sherman College’s Sustaining Stars program honors donors who give monthly to Sherman College. These gifts are crucial because they provide steady and reliable support to the college as we continue to educate the next generation of doctors of chiropractic. Alumni Association Presents Associateships 101 Panel   Sherman College Alumni Association President and Director of Continuing Education Dr. Jillian Farrell, ’09, led a panel of doctors familiar with all aspects of an associateship in a live virtual Q&A for current students. During the panel, Sherman students heard answers to all types of questions about associateships to help them decide if this might be the right path for them after graduation.   The panel consisted of Drs. Kimberly Fielder, ’06, Peter Kevorkian, and Charles Tucker, ’20. Each panelist offered a different perspective through his or her experiences with associateships, whether that be associating with a doctor, going through the negotiation phase, or being the doctor looking to hire an associate.   The Alumni Association was excited to offer this program to Sherman students as it expands it outreach. The Association promotes the philosophy, science, and art of chiropractic by offering direction, service, and support for the growth and development of Sherman College and its alumni.

Emergency Fund Supports Students in Need In a world which seems to have no constants, each day can present a new set of challenges for Sherman College students to overcome. But thanks to those who have given to the Sherman Pride Student Emergency Fund, Sherman College students can find a source of support and encouragement. “Covid-19 really impacted my family and made things hard for us,” says ninth quarter student Terrionna Gannon. “I know that I can always count on Sherman to help me in any way I may need. These funds were used to help me out with buying new things that I needed for online courses, and for household necessities. Thank you, Sherman College, for being so great in making sure that your students are taken care of during these trying times.” Despite uncertain times, Sherman students have found one constant: and that is a chiropractic community to encourage and support them. Students have the certainty that if a need arises, they are able to apply for up to a $500 grant (not a loan) from the Sherman Pride Student Emergency Fund. Browning Named to PACE Review Team Associate Professor and Technique Department Chair Jaime Browning, D.C., ’09, D.C.C.J.P., recently accepted an invitation to serve on the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards (FCLB) Providers of Approved Continuing Education (PACE) Review Team as the Sherman College representative. The Review Team cited Browning’s “diverse expertise” as an important addition to its program. According to the FCLB website, the PACE program recognizes continuing education courses which promote quality chiropractic continuing education programs, provide reliable and scientifically sound educational updates, help chiropractors remain current on licensing and new, effective clinical protocols, and help practitioners avoid isolation through peer-related educational activities. A primary focus of the PACE program is to streamline essential regulatory requirements for consistency in continuing education approval processes. Review Team members are tasked with evaluating applications for PACE recognition to determine whether they meet the standards set forth in the organization’s criteria; they may also assess current courses for compliance.

Lewis Appointed CCE Councilor, Earns Doctor of Education Degree Senior Director of Institutional Effectiveness Crissy Lewis, Ed.D., was recently elected as a Category 4 Councilor to the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), where she will serve a three-year term beginning in January 2021. The Council serves as the policy and decision-making body of the CCE and is responsible for all accreditation decisions. Lewis offers expertise in many areas of chiropractic education, particularly institutional effectiveness and the use of data and outcomes for programmatic improvements. She also serves as a peer evaluator for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. In June 2020, Lewis earned her Doctor of Education degree from Northeastern University, where her research focused on organizational voice and psychological safety. She oversees accreditation and compliance efforts, leads the Offices of Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Support, guides the college through the planning and implementation of the Strategic Plan, and provides data analysis to ensure the college makes evidence-informed decisions.

Admissions Hosts Health Profession Advisor Program Earlier this month, the Admissions Office hosted a Virtual Health Professions Advisor Program. Hosted by Admissions Counselor Kaley Kilpatrick, this program provides firsthand information about chiropractic to those who are regularly in contact with prospective students. During this installment, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Joe Donofrio, ’94, presented information about chiropractic and answered questions about the profession. Participants were also provided resources about Sherman College, including information about classes and upcoming events such as the fall Showcase Sherman Weekend November 13-14. Kent Presents at Annual SC Upstate Research Symposium Director of the Center for Scholarly Activity Christopher Kent, M.A., D.C., J.D., presented at USC Upstate’s 16th Annual SC Upstate Research Symposium on September 26. His platform presentation, titled, “Mental Health and Chiropractic: A Brief History,” was held as part of the health sciences session of the event, which was held virtually. Sherman College of Chiropractic regularly sponsors and participates in this event. Other institutions presenting included USC Upstate, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Lander University, and the Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy.

Rhodes Receives Awards from Safe Homes, College News Association   Senior Director of Marketing and Communications Karen Brower Rhodes, M.B.A., was recognized as Board Member of the Year by Safe Homes-Rape Crisis Coalition (SHRCC) in Spartanburg. SHRCC provides services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in a three-county area. Rhodes began her two-year term as chair of the board of directors in March 2020. In addition, the College News Association of the Carolinas (CNAC) recently presented Rhodes with the H. Lewis Gaston Award in recognition of her outstanding service to CNAC and for accomplishments in public relations in higher education.

Ambassador Spotlight: Jessica Crowley of Winchester, VA Education: James Madison University, major in health science with a minor in biology Activities/Hobbies: I love running, hiking, reading, and drinking coffee. Why Chiropractic: I didn’t grow up under chiropractic care, so I don’t have a personal testimony about how chiropractic changed my life, but from a biological standpoint, I believe the incredibly precise way the body functions from within is the result of some intelligent design. Chiropractic partners with the body’s intelligent ability to fix broken systems from the inside out, and I can’t think of a better way to serve my future community. Regent Program Helps Advance Sherman College The Regent Program provides for the advancement of Sherman College.
