Dear UPCDA Colleagues,

We have reached the time of year when we finish the business term and focus on some family fun (unless you're an accountant). UPCDA members celebrated the holiday season this month at Villa Bellini's (previously Tio Pepe Restaurant). Once again general dentists and specialists renewed old friendships and sparked new ones. Many thanks to Dr. Tim Doerner for setting up our reservation and taking fun pictures at the party. Nearly 40 doctors and significant others swapped stories while enjoying the superb food and service at Villa Bellini's.

On January 17th you'll want to take advantage and attend Dr. Mark Davis' presentation on significant changes in implant dentistry and prosthodontics over the last forty years. We are fortunate to have a gifted speaker and practitioner like Mark in our district. Mark your cell-phone calendar for January 17th at Belleair Country Club!

On February 23rd UPCDA will offer a course on prosthodontics given by a lab technician, Conrad Rensburg. I always find that lab technicians can help save a case because they know the limits of the restorative materials. This will surely be an enlightening meeting!

Due to scheduling restraints, our team bowling night has moved from February) to March 2nd, Friday night at Maples Bowling Lanes (formerly Countryside Lanes). This night is great fun because doctors and staff members can put a face to the voices they speak to in colleagues' offices. The friendly rivalries on the lanes lead to whoops and hollers all night long. Games and shoes are sponsored by UPCDA, food and drinks are provided by the bosses. Come and join us at Maples Lanes.

Other significant events in 2018 include the West Coast Winter Meeting at CAMLS in Tampa, on February 2nd. There are plenty of openings for dentist and team member courses, so sign up before the biennium deadline for CE requirements arrives. Yup, it's that time of your career again. The West Coast Meeting will help you earn needed credits.

Another reminder to register to volunteer for the FL Mission of Mercy that will take place at the Lee Civic Center on March 9-10th. Invite your colleagues and team members who want to give something back. We all are blessed for being licensed in our profession. Let's help the unfortunate enjoy a better day.
The entire Upper Pinellas County Dental Association wishes to congratulate our 2018-2019 slate of officers:
Dr. Tim Doerner - President
Dr. Jeremy Albert - President-Elect
Dr. Jose Lazaro - First Vice President & Program Chair
Dr. Phil Hedger - Secretary
Dr. Emanuel Kontos - Treasurer

On behalf of this year's Executive Council, I wish everyone a Healthy and Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and Happy Holidays. See everyone on January 17th at Belleair Country Club!

Sincerely,

George Kostakis, DDS
President

Course Description:
Dental patient expectations and demand have skyrocketed to an all-time high in both Specialty and General Practice Dentistry.

The technical and materials advances made possible by computer technology, coupled with the immediacy of information and real-time education dissemination via social and broadcast media, creates new opportunity and expanded risks for all models of dental care.

One of the very slow to develop, but extremely important emerging paradigm shifts, is the increasing recognition and acceptance by the medical community of the role of systemic inflammation in many disease processes. Oral pathogens liberated into the ulcerated periodontal tissues or other dental pathology very likely will be proven to be a significant etiological factor for cardiac disease, Alzheimer's and other serious medical conditions.

Our patient responsibility is becoming even more serious and demanding than in years past.

Patient advice and treatment should be based on careful decisions intended to meet the needs of patients in an efficient, safe, and post-effective manner to improve the quality of their life in ways noticeable and appreciated by the patient. The value of oral health and its relationship to systemic health should be well understood by care providers and patients. A healthy oral stomatognathic system promotes longevity.

Specific skills, techniques and concepts of patient and practice management will be discussed. Tonight's program will discuss practical solutions and suggest ethical principles to prosper in the ever-changing environment.

Above all else-Dentistry is a people oriented profession. Patient management and skillful communication are essential elements of successful practice today and forever...regardless of the coming fantastical technological advances!

Dr. Davis will share important lessons learned from 50 years of dental practice in Clearwater, Florida.

About the Speaker
Mark Davis is well known to the Upper Pinellas County Dental Association, having been a UPCDA member since 1968 and serving as our President in 1976-77. This is his 50th year in dentistry in Clearwater.

Mark Davis regarded dentistry as both his vocation and avocation. He loved to work and only missed one day in 45 years of practice. Mark's goal was to continue working as long as he was able and hoped to practice at least as long as Dr. James Hayslett.

Mark Davis's enormous surprise in life was the occurrence of extremely unusual medical events suddenly occurring near the end of 2013. He was never able to return to practice to chase Jim Hayslett's longevity of practice.

One of the thought provoking questions to be discussed on January 17th asks, "what would happen in your life if tomorrow was the last day you were able to work as a clinician?"

In past conversations with Mark, I know he is willing to share with us many of the lessons he learned in 46 years of clinical dentistry that contribute to dental practice and patient relationships at the highest professional level.

He placed his first dental implant in 1971 and immediately realized implant dentistry offered patients solutions to dental problems that conventional treatment could not solve.

However, the profession was not ready for implant dentistry and frequently opposed the notion of dental implants being anything other than bad treatment performed by charlatans.

Mark relayed to me he knew it would be a very long time before implant dentistry would be accepted as the treatment of choice for many dental problems.

The changes in treatment from 1968 to today, 2018, are amazing...and-

He predicts the next 20+ years will be exponentially even more amazing and full of opportunity for dentistry and our patients.

Mark is a member of many organizations including the American Dental Association tiered membership and to list a few groups important to his career development:

American Academy of Restorative Dentistry
American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics
American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Honored Fellow
Alabama Implant Study Group
Society for the Preservation of Oral Health
American Academy of Dental Anesthesiology
American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry, Diplomate and Past President 2000

Mark is the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Aaron Gerskoff Award from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry for significant contributions to the development of the discipline of implant dentistry.

And...

In 2015, Dr. Davis was named by the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry as The Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, and is only the 13th UKCD Alumnus to receive this recognition in the 50-year history of the college of Dentistry.
