A note from Chapter President, Tracy Miller

Greetings Tucson NAWIC #122 and Friends!

Thanksgiving 2020 is already here! I wish all our members, families and friend a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Gobble, Gobble!

There is a lot of great news to share with the membership this month.

First things first:
Congratulations to Taylor Kessler! Taylor and her husband welcomed baby Charlie Wade Kessler on November 3rd at 7lbs 2oz and 20 inches. Taylor and baby Charlie are doing well.

Congratulations to NAWIC Tucson Chapter #122! We had the highest retention of members for the Pacific Southwest Region for the 2019-2020 year. We received $50.00 and a NAWIC 2019-2020 Recruiter Pin.

Business:
While making certain to adhere to all CDC guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19, we are still able hold some of our NAWIC events. The board is still meeting by Zoom to plan our chapter’s future. Tough times do not last, tough people do!

A NAWIC tent has ordered for all of us to use to use for special events where NAWIC is being represented. Once the tent is received, pictures will be shared with the membership. Thank you to Tammy Minot with Southwest Solutions. Tammy and her staff did a fantastic job with the artwork and first-class customer service.

Susan Kregar has been busy updating the NAWIC website. Please take a moment to look at the website and share any suggestions or ideas.

Suicide Prevention Hotline - Call 988
On October 17th, the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act  (S.2661) was signed into law on October 17th. The law was sent to the President for signature after receiving unanimous support from Congress. This legislation will support the full implementation of the three-digit “9-8-8” dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline through funding guidance, federal reporting, and specialized services for at-risk communities like LGBTQ-youth and Veterans. A well-resourced, easy-to-remember 988 crisis hotline will increase access to necessary resources and support in times of crisis that will save lives.

It is through the efforts of the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, and its many Field Advocates, that we have seen real change to bring our country’s mental health system into the 21st century with the full passage of the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act.

Please note that the 9-8-8 crisis hotline will not be nationally available until July 2022. Callers should continue to access the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline through 1-800-273-8255 until 9-8-8 is fully operational.
