Training Provides Insight to Careers in Forestry
The Central Valley Forestry Corps, in partnership with Reedley College and the Fresno EOC Local Conservation Corps, will begin training participants in January 2020.
Receipt of a small WAF 7.0 grant provided the opportunity to jumpstart the training of forestry tech workers to cut down dead trees and brush in the Sierras.

Fiscal Agent on
Valley-wide Application
The State of California has finally released the SB1 Request for Proposal - a permanent training funding stream directly attached to infrastructure funding.
We will act as the fiscal agent
on a valley-wide application.

Flexible Training Program Offered in Sanger
In partnership with the Valley ROP, an Emergency Medical Technician training program was launched in Sanger.
The training program is offered on weeknights and weekends
to allow participation of both unemployed and under-employed clients.

The unemployment rate in Fresno County was 6.6 percent in August 2019, down from a revised 7.2 percent in July 2019, and below the year-ago estimate of 6.7 percent.
This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 4.2 percent for California and 3.8 percent for the nation during the same period.

Between July 2019 and August 2019:
- Total industry employment increased by 3,400 jobs (up 0.8 percent), to total 416,400.
- The largest month-over increase was reported in farm employment with the addition of 1,800 jobs (up 3.5 percent).
- Non-farm employment rose by 1,600 jobs (up 0.4 percent).
- Manufacturing registered a gain of 1,700 jobs, with the entire gain coming in non-durable goods.
- Education and health services grew by 1,200 jobs. Health care and social assistance rose by 1,100 jobs and educational services added 100 jobs.
- Manufacturing moved up by 100 jobs, with the entire gain coming in non-durable goods.

Outreach of Business Services Expands
to the West Side and East Side of Fresno County

A lot is going on at the Business Services Center (BSC)! Erik Cherkaski, Manager of the BSC is pleased to welcome the addition of two Business Services Coordinators to his team to increase awareness and provide the needed no-cost services to the West Side and East Side areas of Fresno County.
The primary focus of Juan Carranza and Veronica Granados-McAlister will be to provide assistance and no-cost services to the business communities, municipalities and community-based organizations to facilitate their connection to vital resources and services in the rural communities.
- The West Side rural communities include Huron, Coalinga, San Joaquin, Mendota, Kerman and Firebaugh and will be assisted by Juan.
- The East Side rural communities will be assisted by Veronica and include Sanger, Selma, Reedley, Kingsburg, Orange Cove, Fowler, Del Rey and Parlier.
In addition, they will utilize their years of experience in community relations, business services, economic development and workforce development to serve their respective areas. They will meet with municipal leaders to better understand their needs, goals, and business community challenges in order to develop collaborative strategies for the benefit of our rural communities. And, they will also work to connect our West Side and East Side businesses to resources and services that could potentially prevail over current challenges and facilitate the achievement of near-future goals.
Juan and Veronica will have occasional office hours in various rural communities on the West Side and East Side to meet with businesses. Check our website at

Learn how to conduct basic life support assessments and assist with medical and trauma emergencies. This training program will prepare you for the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification exam and we will connect you to full-time employment opportunities.

Learn skills in various trades such as electrical, plumbing, pipefitting, sheet metal, painting, iron work and cement mason. Plus, upon successful completion various certifications are awarded.
