Dear UPCDA Colleagues,

Welcome to a busy season for dentists. Snowbirds call on us to care for them while they escape the cold up North. Dentists' Day on the Hill taking place in Tallahassee this week, where we have direct conversations with Florida legislators. February is also Give Kids A Smile (GKAS), click here to learn more about this national event. On February 24th the Clearwater Health Department will be hosting a GKAS event and many UPCDA members will be participating.

We are also finishing another biennium for required CE courses. Make sure your records are complete. Many of us enjoyed the WCDDA meeting on February 2 in Tampa, featuring Dr. Stanley Malamed and Larry Guzzardo as speakers. We sharpened our knowledge of medical emergencies, patient communication and treatment plan acceptance. On February 1 dentists and their significant others enjoyed an elegant cocktail and award social at the Oxford Exchange, also in Tampa.

There's more! On January 17, Dr. Mark Davis gave us a personal, urgent message:  treat each day in dentistry like it is your last. Sometimes our goals and dreams are cut short by accidents and health changes, so be sure to enjoy your work and give it your best effort EVERY DAY. Thank you Dr. Davis for your poignant advice!

Please take note of a controversial bill, Senate Bill 1498, which is gaining some momentum in Tallahassee.  If your professional feathers were ruffled when Sam's Club opened up whitening booths, or when dental hygienists were give permission to administer local anesthetic, then you're going to take flight if SB 1498 passes! Dental Therapists, theoretically, could be diagnosing, restoring and extracting teeth without dental school or residency training.

On Friday, February 23, UPCDA offers you a unique implant/prosthetics course, starting at 8AM at Countryside Country Club.  Conrad Rensburg is a skilled lab technician who will show how to succeed and avoid pitfalls with implant-supported overdentures.

Before politicians begin dictating when and where we serve needy patients, here is your chance to make a big bang that the politicians will hear. Mission of Mercy takes place in Fort Meyers on March 9-10. In three previous volunteer events, over $5 million of dental services were donated to residents of Tampa, Jacksonville and Pensacola. Hundreds of dental team members will meet on March 9-10. PLEASE help this year, either with direct volunteering, donating supplies or funds to support the equipment rentals. The UPCDA will host 50/50 raffles at the February 23 Friday lecture, and at the Team Bowling Night on March 2.

Finally, dentists and periodontists invite your hygienists to hear Dr. DeWitt Wilkerson speak on Integrative Dental Medicine on April 18 at Bon Appetit Restaurant. Also, the end-of-the-year party will again be at Clearwater Beach Hampton Inn on May 11.  Stay busy!

Sincerely,

George Kostakis, DDS
President

Course Description:
Advancements in technologies are moving at a rapid pace and many clinicians are questioning the role that emerging technologies are playing in their practices. The goal of this program is to give clinicians the latest information and the tools necessary to succeed in integrating innovative technologies into their practices. You will learn the latest about state-of-the-art patient-specific overdenture solutions and how they are gaining popularity. The concept uses rigid telescopic principles to give your patients a pure implant-borne, palate free, removable result that is easy to clean. Integrating precision technology with today's patient's needs provides them the functionality and esthetics they demand and makes removable dentistry enjoyable again.

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to understand:
  • Proper implant diagnostics: a collaborative approach
  • The different attachment system options
  • Step-by-step instructions for the clinical team
  • Overdenture fabrication and esthetics

Dental Therapist Update

Thank you for responding to the call-to-action on HB 683 by Rep. Daniel Perez, legislation to create dental therapists in Florida.

On January 29, the House Health Quality Subcommittee approved an amendment to HB 683 that removed the original language of the bill and replaced it with language to study the "affordability, access and delivery of dental care." The FDA had several representatives speak against creating dental therapists, as well as the new language to establish a study, because it is unnecessary. The FDA presented the committee with initiatives and proposals outlined in Florida's Action for Dental Health and stated that implementing the dental student loan repayment program legislation would be a better investment of state funds instead of commissioning a study. HB 683 still has two committee references to get through in the House - Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee (chaired by Rep. Jason Brodeur) and Health & Human Services Committee (chaired by Rep. Travis Cummings). The Senate companion bill, SB 1498 by Sen. Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg), has not been heard in committee.

On Wednesday , the House Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee considered CS/HB 683 by Rep. Daniel Perez (dental therapist study). Since this is the appropriations committee, the bill was amended to include an appropriations of $250,000 to fund the study, despite the analysis from the Department of Health that said it would cost the DOH at least $500,000 (and they may not have the capacity to do a study).

Since it was Dentists Day on the Hill, FDA had everyone that could fill out a card to waive their time in opposition to the bill - to do so. FDA strategically lined up several speakers to address the committee to provide several different perspectives on why it wasn't prudent to use state funds to do a study (something that's not needed).

Watch the video from the link below of the committee hearing - CS/HB 683 starts around 7:50 into the video.

Stay tuned to your FDA reports for more on this topic.
