Are you interested in learning about all of the Extension programs available in Anne Arundel County and throughout the state? Do you have some great ideas you would like to share with our educators to perhaps inspire programs of the future?

Once again we will be attempting to reorganize an Extension Advisory Council for Anne Arundel County! Thanks to those who responded to my last request- I have not forgotten you! We would love to have some additional people who are interested in food, agriculture, youth development, our environment, personal finance and everything connected to these topics! Individuals as well as representatives from agencies, faith based groups, community organizations and similar  groups are welcome!

Please send me a note expressing interest. I look forward to hearing from you!

Signage with the new UME and Master Gardener logos were recently placed at numerous
historic and demonstration gardens throughout Anne Arundel County. One such location is on the B & A  Trail in Glen Burnie, in the 600 block of Greenway Road, SE just north of Harundale Plaza. Master Gardeners maintain four flower beds planted with generally low maintenance,  drought resistant, mostly native plants that attract beneficial insects, butterflies and birds. The beds are along a particularly busy pedestrian  section of the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail which stretches along the route of the old B & A Short Line Railroad, which formerly connected Annapolis and Baltimore. To find out more about this and other Master Gardening projects in the county visit http://extension.umd.edu/anne-arundel-county/master-gardeners/master-gardener-projects.

Fall Training is almost complete with 23 participants expected to begin their journey to become
active Anne Arundel County Master Gardeners. The 2018 class had the benefit of accessing online training in addition to traditional classroom instruction. This group is also the first group to be able to begin volunteering on projects and accruing service hours before completing the training and passing the exam. Changes in UME policy allow new interns to  begin  volunteering after completing the required UME forms and the volunteer orientation and policy training module which occurred in the first class. Many have already participated in project work and logged in service hours.

Naked Garden Soil Is Not Cool... Keep It Covered This Winter

Plant and animal existence depends on   healthy, functioning soils  but humans too often treat it like dirt. We can improve soil health in gardens and on farms by:
  1. limiting soil disturbance (tillage)
  2. planting a diversity of plant species
  3. keeping soil covered throughout the year
These practices reduce erosion and nutrient run-off, build organic matter, and increase carbon storage in soils which helps mitigate the effects of climate change.

Did you know...

In North America, trick-or-treating  has been  a Halloween tradition since the late 1920s. In  Britain and Ireland the tradition of going house-to-house collecting food at Halloween goes back at least as far as the 16th century, as  does  the tradition of  people  wearing costumes at Halloween. Happy Halloween!
