On November 18, Calgary City Council passed a historic Notice of Motion “Combatting Antisemitism in the City of Calgary,” which included a resolution formally recognizing and proclaiming January 27 as a city-wide International Holocaust Remembrance Day.  This motion, which was initially put forth by Councillor Diane Colley-Urquhart, was a significant step forward for our community and our city. Over 100 people, many of whom were community members, Holocaust Survivors and their families, and students from The Calgary Jewish Academy , came out to witness this historic event. Sincere and heartfelt thanks to Calgary City Council and Yasher koach to everyone who championed this landmark event! Did you know that this motion was put in place under the guidance and encouragement of Calgary Jewish Federation and others in the community?   Make your UJA gift  today to continue Powering a brighter future for Jewish Calgarians.
On November 14, 55 women of all ages gathered together at Calgary JCC for the first-ever community Challah Bake led by Nessie Hollander. Done as part of the world-wide Shabbat Project, participants got creative as they braided and baked fresh Challah while listening to a live Klezmer band! A highlight of the evening was when, as bakers were waiting for the Challah to rise, three young girls cut their hair to donate to children in Israel living with cancer. Yasher koach to Nessie and Calgary JCC for leading our community in such a meaningful Shabbat Project experience, and to the three young leaders who bravely donated their locks to support those in need!
