In recent weeks, the Gulf region suffered the impacts of several tropical events. The Gulf of Mexico Alliance compiled resources that may be helpful in the aftermath of these storms.
Materials address federal, state, and other organization disaster readiness and response information.

Registration is open for the Fully Serving the Underserved workshop
Last month we asked you to save the date for January 12-13, 2021, for the virtual workshop "Fully Serving the Underserved." Registration is now open. The goal is to create an informative professional development and peer-to-peer learning workshop to engage and support underserved and underrepresented populations. Sessions will address identifying your audience, actively engaging the community, and understanding resources and support that may be needed. Get more information as it develops this fall from the Education and Engagement Team. We will announce a keynote speaker later this month. This Gulf Star project is supported by Equinor.

Marine Debris Cross-Team plans virtual October mid-year meeting
The Gulf of Mexico Alliance Marine Debris Cross-Team Initiative is planning a virtual mid-year meeting October 20-21, 2020. The meeting will be available through GoToMeeting. The purpose of this meeting is to review cross-team updates, plan to implement Action Plan IV, and discuss grant applications. Contact Caitlin Wessel for agenda updates. Shout out this month for Dr. Jim Pahl
This month we are recognizing Dr. Jim Pahl. He's a senior Coastal Resource Scientist with the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.
A solid supporter of the Alliance for years, Jim continues to be integral to our partnership. He is the Habitat Resources Team chair and co-leads the Comprehensive Conservation, Restoration, and Resilience Planning Cross-Team. His support includes countless hours organizing and leading calls and virtual webinars to plan for the next Governors' Action Plan IV (APIV).
Jim's commitment to GOMA has led to many on-the-ground projects to restore habitat, implement living shoreline alternatives, support regional sediment management, and promote understanding of sea level rise and storm surge modeling.

Mobile Bay NEP takes people on a virtual Mobile-Tensaw Delta tour
The Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) recently kicked off a public outreach component of its Mobile-Tensaw Apalachee Watershed Management Plan. They released a virtual boat tour through the Delta and issued a survey soliciting community feedback.
The virtual boat tour demonstrates the MBNEP's commitment to continuing public involvement in its watershed management planning process during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Pointe-au-Chien Tribe experiences success
In 2017, the Gulf of Mexico Alliance entered into a partnership with the Pointe-au-Chien Tribe of coastal Louisiana. Coordinating with the Louisiana Sea Grant and Lowlander Center, they identified a local boat launch and dock as a priority for improvements to their community resilience. Tribal members consider access to the water an essential component of their cultural and economic resilience. They also use the area during education and outreach activities. As a result of dock improvements, an unanticipated benefit occurred during the recent storms. Fishing boats used the area for safe harbor during Tropical Storm Cristobal in June and Hurricane Laura in August. |

The Gulf of Mexico Alliance maintains a Funding Opportunities web page of programs. Below are our selected opportunities this month.
Florida Department of Environmental Protection Resilience Planning Grant
The purpose of this grant is to promote community resilience planning, vulnerability assessments, address adaptation plans, and comprehensive plan goals, objectives, policies, regional coordination, along with environmental justice. The deadline is October 9, 2020.
Alabama Power Foundation Grants
Applications must address at least one of the APR five initiatives: Educational Advancement, Civic and Community Development, Arts and Cultural Enrichment, Health and Human Services and Environmental Stewardship. The next deadline is October 16, 2020.
NOAA Marine Debris Program FY2021 Marine Debris Research Grant CompetitionThis opportunity provides funding to support eligible organizations to conduct research directly related to marine debris through field, laboratory, and modeling experiments. Letters of intent are due November 5, 2020 . |
