News Release
September 10, 2020

Beginning Monday, September 14, 2020, all students attending face-to-face classes in the Monroe County School System will have the opportunity to receive school breakfast and lunch at no charge under the USDA Seamless Summer Option Waiver.  The free meal opportunity was made possible by recent action announced on September 1, 2020 by Secretary Sonny Perdue on behalf of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is intended to support students and school systems during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ms. Lisa Budd, Director of School Nutrition for Monroe County, made the announcement after receiving information from the Georgia Department of Education. According to Ms. Budd, the USDA Seamless Summer Option Waiver providing for the free feeding program will conclude December 31, 2020 or when federal funding is depleted -- whichever happens first.

Because the free feeding program is not scheduled to continue through the full school year, Ms. Budd said it is important that all parents who may qualify for free or reduced-price meals under the normal National School Lunch Program complete applications as soon as possible.  This will ensure applications and approvals are in place when they are needed. On-line applications may be completed through the student's SchoolCafe (SchoolCafe.com) account which can be accessed at https://www.monroe.k12.ga.us/schoolnutrition.

By participating in the USDA Seamless Summer Option Waiver, all meals as of September 1, 2020, will be reflected as free which means any paid meals served since that day will be credited back to the student's account.  Any meal charges accrued in the month of August are still the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

"We are excited to have this opportunity to support student learning with nutritious, healthy, and no charge meals for all students even if for a limited time," said Ms.  Budd. "While many things have changed during the pandemic, our commitment to serving our students quality meals has not."
