OSHA Authorizes Live Online Delivery of Safety Classes to Expand Availability of OSHA Training
The Coronavirus pandemic has changed the world of safety training seemingly overnight. Traditional in-person classroom training now requires physical distancing and other safety guidelines, greatly reducing class size and limiting social interaction among participants and instructors. This change has led to the rise of distance learning and the development of virtual classrooms, allowing training providers to create a collaborative environment between students and instructors while guaranteeing the safety of all participants.
The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District has been authorized by OSHA to expand the availability of OSHA classes using a live, online video-based delivery system. Attending our live, virtual classroom trainings delivers an experience very similar to attending in-person courses, including real-time interaction among students and instructors. Our live OSHA authorized classes via Zoom offer the same curriculum, certificates of attendance and continuing education units (CEUs) and are available during the same convenient hours as our in-person courses.
Please note: Class schedules may change with little notice due to COVID-19 restrictions. Visit our website for the most current schedule of live, online classes.

How to Maximize Your Virtual Learning Experience
Virtual learning provides an opportunity to boost your safety knowledge, expand your skills and bolster your future career opportunities from the convenience of your home or other location of your choice. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your virtual classroom experience:
Create a Learning Environment
Now more than ever, many people are getting used to the discipline of working remotely, and one way to make that easier and more effective is to create a good work environment. This principle applies to virtual learning as well. By creating a dedicated learning space with no distractions similar to what you would have in a physical classroom, you will be more focused and more receptive to learning, says David Povey of the International Compliance Association (Four ways to maximize your virtual learning experience). He suggests putting away unnecessary items in your workspace that might be distracting.
Ask Questions and Be an Active Participant
A facilitator will be conscious of who is asking questions and try to allow everyone to provide input throughout a session, much the same as in a physical classroom. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or share comments as appropriate. You may need to use a feature in the virtual environment to get the facilitator’s attention, such as virtually raising your hand, but staying engaged and involved is key to the success of a virtual learning environment.
Participate in Interactive Exercises
One of the most enjoyable aspects of learning in a physical classroom is the interaction with other learners. Thanks to the power of technology, this experience can still be enjoyed while in a virtual classroom. Facilitators will often provide opportunities for interaction, such as breakout sessions and group activities. Make the most of this chance to collaborate, share ideas and gain individual perspectives to enhance your learning experience.
Expand Your Network
Continuing the conversation with peers after the class is over not only enhances learning but also provides an opportunity for networking. You can connect and stay in touch with fellow participants in much the same way as you would after in-person training.
Virtual learning is a convenient, effective and positive way to learn. Hopefully, some of the above suggestions can help you maximize your virtual learning experience, boost your skillset and build your professional network.

OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard Guides Employers to Control Employee Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens
In order to reduce or eliminate the hazards of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, OSHA requires employers to implement an exposure control plan with details on employee protection measures. The plan must describe how an employer will use engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, employee training, medical surveillance, hepatitis B vaccinations, and other provisions as required by OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030). Engineering controls are the primary means of eliminating or minimizing employee exposure and include the use of safer medical devices, such as needleless devices, shielded needle devices, and plastic capillary tubes. CAUTION!
If you are stuck by a needle or other sharp or get blood or other potentially infectious materials in your eyes, nose, mouth, or on broken skin, immediately flood the exposed area with water and clean any wound with soap and water or a skin disinfectant if available. Report this immediately to your employer and seek immediate medical attention.
