Since the BRAIN Initiative's launch in 2013, FAS Research Development has disseminated information via this newsletter about all of the funding opportunities related to the initiative. We send this newsletter to a targeted list of faculty, including  faculty affiliates  of the  Center for Brain Science  (CBS) and the  Mind Brain Behavior  (MBB) Interfaculty Initiative. This project is being carried out in collaboration with the Center for Brain Science.  Please feel free to forward this newsletter  to interested colleagues. All Harvard University faculty and administrators may subscribe here , and recipients may unsubscribe at any time. In addition, you may access the Science Division Funding Spotlight here. Award Information: Award budgets are composed of salary and other program-related expenses. The K99/R00 award will provide up to 5 years of support in two phases. The initial (K99) phase provides support for up to 2 years of mentored postdoctoral research training and career development. The second (R00) phase provides up to 3 years of independent research support, which is contingent on satisfactory progress during the K99 phase and an approved, independent, tenure-track (or equivalent) faculty position. The BRAIN Initiative intends to commit $4M per year in fiscal years 2020-23 to fund an estimated 20 awards per year.

The purpose of the NIH BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00) program is to enhance diversity in the neuroscience workforce and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented, NIH-supported, independent investigators from diverse backgrounds in  BRAIN Initiative research areas. For the purpose of this announcement, institutions are encouraged to identify candidates who will enhance diversity as described in  NOT-OD-18-210. This program is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding postdoctoral researchers with a research and/or clinical doctorate degree from mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The program will provide independent NIH research support during this transition in order to help awardees launch competitive, independent research careers.

Applicants must have no more than 5 years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of the initial or the subsequent resubmission application. The K99/R00 award is intended for individuals who require at least 12 months of mentored research training and career development (K99 phase) before transitioning to the R00 award phase of the program. Before submitting the application, the candidate must identify a mentor who will supervise the proposed career development and research experience. Candidates are  required to commit a minimum of 75% of full-time professional effort (i.e., a minimum of 9 person-months) to their program of career development during the mentored phase. During the R00 phase, although candidates are required to devote no less than 75% of their full-time, 12-month professional effort to research (i.e., full-time for 9 person-months), the required 9 person-months of research effort need not be devoted exclusively to the R00-supported research.

Two K99/R00 Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) have been reissued. RFA-NS-19-043 is designed specifically for applicants proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary study to a clinical trial. Applicants to this FOA are permitted to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.

Applicants proposing a clinical trial or an ancillary study to an ongoing clinical trial as lead investigator should apply to the companion RFA-NS-19-044. This FOA is designed specifically for applicants proposing to serve as the lead investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary study to an existing trial, as part of their research and career development.
