From the desk of our S.T.E.A.M. Lab Students in ECE2 through 2nd grade got an introduction to computer coding in STEAM. Drawing inspiration from Simchat Torah, students discussed how one of the things the Torah gives us is a set of rules to follow. This inspired creating games that required our students to create rules (codes) for their creatures to follow. ECE2 had a great time inputting codes into our code-a-pillar. ECE3 learned to use the code-hopping game, and ECE4 learned how to program Bottley the Robot to accomplish different challenges. The older students learned how to code our mouse one step at a time to reach its required destination and practiced their coding skills by challenging each other to a coding duel, as seen in the top right photo.  Federation Mission Send Off We were honored and excited to lend our Sukkah out last week to the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston Mission Send Off. We are so happy to be able to help out such an amazing community organization that is there for all of Houston's Jewish Day schools. The Federation's Israel Your Way is a one-of-a-kind, multi-generational journey through Israel with four customized tracks to choose from. The trip takes place November 4 through 9.

Sensory Seek Students in Morah Esther's ECE2 class enjoyed utilizing the new sensory rice container. Their first activity was to distinguish a real Etrog (citron) which grows on a tree fropm the fake toy one which was made in a factory. Sukkot Scrabble Students in Ori Friedmann's 7th and 8th grade Hebrew class enjoyed enriching their Hebrew vocabulary by playing the game Scrabble, the Sukkot edition.

Stamp and Roll ECE3 students in Mrs. Bryant's art class were excited to use printmaking ink and rollers to stamp fish in their ocean paintings. They had fun rolling the sticky ink onto the stamps they made out of printmaking foam and enjoyed pressing the stamp onto the paper to make their print. Red Ribbon Campaign Students school-wide participated in the national Red Ribbon Week Campaign which advocates drug prevention and healthy choices. Students dressed up throughout the week in different themes to raise awareness about a drug-free lifestyle and making good, healthy life choices.

Leaf Hunt Morah Alissa's ECE3 class took their studies outside to start their Fall unit. The class was excited to take advantage of the stunning weather and went on a leaf hunt where they collected various leaves. They then brought them back, discussed the colors and textures, and made collages. They will also be making leaf prints with the leaves. That's a Wrap! Mrs. Rantz's 3rd grade Judaics class wrapped up the Tishrei (7th month of the Hebrew calendar) holiday season by participating in a picture sort filled with images, brachot (blessings), titles, and much meaning!

Magical Math Ms. Cunningham’s math class enjoyed the beautiful weather and working on solving logarithmic equations in the magical forest. Better Together On Chold HaMoed (weekday of the festival of Sukkot) high school students went to The Medallion to run a Sukkah party for residents. For the 4th year in a row, our students are paired with a buddy at The Medallion as part of our Better Together program. They build meaningful relationships throughout the year and enhance each other's lives.

Athletic Updates

The  Week at a Glance   is a snapshot, but does not reflect any changes made after that date.  Middle School Girls Basketball Due to the holidays being so late, we will hit the ground running this year. The MS Girls will be opening up their season on Tuesday, October 29 with an away game at Holy Spirit Episcopal. Please check the calendar for all other dates and times.  Middle School Boys Basketball Currently, we have a game scheduled for the 5th/6th grade boys. Their first game will be Tuesday, November 5 at Cornerstone Christian.  We had a few 7th and 8th grade boys come out to play. While there are not enough boys to make their own team, we would like them to continue to come out to practice and we will look at the possibility of merging some 6th graders with them to be able to play games. Please check the calendar for all other dates and times. High School Girls Basketball The HS Girls will open up their season on Monday, October 28 with an away game at Emery at 7:30. They will play their first home game on Tuesday, October 29 vs Pasadena First Baptist at 6:15. Please check the calendar for all other dates and times.  High School Boys Basketball The HS Boys will hit the ground running next week. The week starts early with an away game at Emery on October 28 at 6:00 PM and a home game on Tuesday vs Pasadena First Baptist at 7:30. The boys varsity will then travel to Memphis, TN on Thursday to play in the Cooper Invitational Tournament. Please check the calendar for all other dates and times.

Jewish Federation of Greater Houston On Sunday, October 27, at 4 pm , we invite you join us and thousands of individuals across the country as we  "Pause with Pittsburgh"  in a collective moment of remembrance. While we cannot all be in Pittsburgh together, this virtual commemoration will honor the memory of the lives lost and the countless others who were impacted following this senseless act.   Those who wish to participate should visit and register at the  Pause with Pittsburgh   site. Once registered, you will opt in to text messages that include a link to a livestream of the public memorial service in Pittsburgh, a video with a mourning prayer and the names of the 11 lives lost, and an opportunity to submit a message of support.
