Equity manager recalls family's flight with pride
When Diane Luu-Hoang celebrates Asian Heritage Month, she celebrates opportunity and her parents’ courageous journey to secure freedom.

Employment equity manager in the Office of Human Rights, Equity, and Accessibility, she was nine months old when her family fled their homeland of Vietnam.

“My parents had to make an incredible choice to either stay and suffer with the possibility of no future or take the risk and flee from their country with only hope and faith in their hearts to find a land with opportunities or die trying,” Luu-Hoang says.

Odette Alumni give back
Raffaele BComm '94 and Anne Marie Desando MBA '94 are proud Odette School of Business alumni, donor, advisors and mentors.

They are continuing their support of the business school with a second scholarship. The recently established Giuseppe and Immacolata Desando Scholarship is a tribute to Raffaele's parents. This scholarship is intended to honour, not only his parents but every family who left what was home to make a better life in Canada.

The award will be given to a first-generation Canadian, with financial need who demonstrates voluntarism, at the Odette School of Business, on campus or or in the community. Continue reading.
Speaker series to address post-pandemic future for Windsor-Essex
The future of the Windsor-Essex region following the pandemic is the subject of a six-part virtual speaker series hosted by the University of Windsor and the City of Windsor beginning in June.

Envision a Post-COVID Future will feature guest speakers with expertise in areas such as business, social justice, innovation, policy, and technology. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions following the presentations.

Alumna long-listed for prestigious Sobey Art Award
Alana Bartol BFA '04 has been long-listed for the 2021 Sobey Art Award. Bartol comes from a long line of water witches. Her site-responsive works explore divination as a way of understanding across places, species, and bodies. 

Bartol's current exhibition, Processes of Remediation: art, relationships, nature, explores the past, present and future of coal mining in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta. Many of the artworks respond to the proposed Grassy Mountain Coal Project. Learn more.

New book selected for Alumni Book Club
The Alumni Book Club's new book Long Bright River: A Novel by New York Times bestseller Liz Moore follows two, once-inseparable sisters now on opposite sides of the opioid crisis. Kacey lives on the streets and struggles with her addiction, while her sister Mickey walks the same blocks on her police beat.

We're giving away 12 copies of the book. A draw will be held from the list of book club members registered by May 30. Area readers can pick up the book at independently owned River Bookshop in Amherstburg. Books will be mailed to out of town winners.

There's still time to join the book club. There is no cost to participate. You only need a copy of the book to enjoy.
