 What's New at the Nursery

Hello Everyone!
The cooler nights and shorter days remind me that we are in the best season of the year. Fall through winter create some of the most colorful and spectacular sunsets, in my opinion, probably due to the unique cloud formations and the angle of the sun as it sets. This time of the year planting conditions are more ideal as well.
The nursery is looking great this fall thanks to the amazing staff we have and all of their hard work. Fall plants have now arrived and are showing off their rich colors. Some of the plants that remind me of this time of the year are Chrysanthemums, Cyclamen, Pansies, Violas, blooming grasses (especially Muhlenbergia capillaris), Ornamental peppers, Camellias, and Azaleas to name a few. Plus, sun & shade bedding plants and ornamental grasses are now 20% off!
Check out Tibuchina organensis 'Blue Moon', Salvia 'Love and Wishes', and Salvia leucantha 'Midnight' for some beautiful flowers with shades of purple that repeat flowering cycles.
Grasses, on sale now, such as Muhlenbergia capillaris have very showy flowers this time of the year.
Lomandra 'Platinum Beauty' is one of my favorite grasses that provides brilliant foliage any time of the year. Other great plants with colorful foliage include Coprosma 'Tequila sunrise', Hemizygia 'Candy Kisses', Pseuderanthemum variegata, Ligustrum 'Sunshine', or Coleonema 'Sunset gold'.
Indoor plants are extremely popular right now and we are working hard to constantly re-stock our inventory. Specimen plants like Ficus lyrata and 'Audrey' are available, plus braided Ficus 'Alli'.
We also have Coffee plants that can be grown both indoors (bright, warm location) or outdoors (sun to part sun) and will eventually produce coffee beans.
Dracaenas are some of the most durable indoor plants and we have several varieties to choose from. Pleomele reflexa 'variegata' will brighten up any room but prefers bright indirect light.
We have a small amount of more sought-after plants such as Stromelanthe triostar, Rhapidophora tetrasperma, Tradescantia 'Nanouk', and Monstera adansonii, while supplies last (these four shown below left to right).

Cool-season veggies are now coming in full force on a weekly basis. The weather is ideal for beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuces, kale, Asian greens (bok choy, tatsoi, mizuna, etc.) swiss chard, spinach, and peas to name a few.

Once the summer plants have been pulled, remember to re-amend the soil. I recommend E.B. Stone's Recipe 420 soil amended with worm castings. There is a new organic fertilizer that we carry called 420 Recharge which is a major nutrient booster without having to add more soil.
We also have a great selection of Bonsai: flowering and non-flowering, potted and ready to give as a gift, or individual plants, pots and soil to build your own creation. Bonsai is a Japanese art form which uses cultivation techniques to produce small trees in small containers that mimic the shape and scale of full-size trees.

Fall Gardening Tips
October is when we start to see our first true days of autumn. We have already experienced some cooler nighttime and morning temperatures between our summer-like hot spells.
In Southern California, our mild Mediterranean climate makes it possible to plant year-round, but fall is one of the best times of the year to garden: the soil is still warm and the cooler season is soon upon us. As the temperatures start to cool down, working in the garden becomes even more glorious.
October is the peak month for planting cool-season flowers and vegetables. Although you won't be able to enjoy their color until next spring, October is also a great month for planting perennials. By planting now, they will develop a strong root structure during our cool weather and then burst into glorious color in the spring.

Birds and Berries Berries are an important food source for many birds during the winter, especially when the ground is frozen or extremely cold. It is hard for the birds to find worms, snails or insects during this time. Some birds like thrushes, redwing blackbirds, and cedar waxwings find most of their winter food from berries. Some berries that are tasty for birds are poisonous to humans. Some plants use berries as a clever way to entice birds and other animals to distribute their seeds. A plant that produces berries surrounds its seed in juicy, fleshy pith, rewarding the birds that eat them with vitamins and energy. Some berry seeds, like juniper, will actually grow better after passing through a bird's gut, which removes natural chemicals that would otherwise prevent the seed from growing. Other berry seeds, like mistletoe, are sticky, and must cause birds some frustration when they stick to their bills. The birds wipe their bills on other trees, unwittingly sowing more mistletoe plants. Most berries are red or black. This makes the berries easier for birds to find. Evergreens and plants that produce berries when their leaves are still green, generally produce red berries, which show up well against a green background. Black berries are thought to show up better against leaves that have turned yellow or brown. Birds feed in different ways. Thrushes and waxwings feed in flocks. Many other birds will feed by themselves hoping to keep the berries all to themselves. Thrushes and waxwings prefer berries with smaller seeds, as they are really interested in the flesh. Other birds like grossbeaks can make use of the seed itself, and so are attracted to berries with large seeds, like hawthorn and cherries. The winter is a good time to consider planting fruit and berry bearing trees and shrubs in your garden. The following plants are especially good for a wide range of birds: Pyracantha, cotoneaster, berberis, hawthorn, honeysuckle, holly, raspberry, viburnum and many more. Antioxidants: Research indicates many species of berries for birds contain antioxidants that help them handle the stress of migration. Shelter: Many berry bushes provide essential nesting habitat throughout the year while protecting birds from bad weather and predators.
