Lantz and Tipirneni to provide expertise for IHPI policy and engagement team

IHPI welcomes Paula Lantz, Ph.D., M.S., M.A., professor of public policy, and Renu Tipirneni, M.D., M.SC., assistant professor of internal medicine, in their new roles as IHPI Policy Faculty Advisors.

They will provide strategic advice to IHPI's Policy Engagement and External Relations team related to the development and implementation of several IHPI activities such as Policy Sprints, the Impact Accelerator Award, policy issue briefs, and identify opportunities such as workshops for members to engage in policy.

Michele Heisler, M.D., M.P.A., is the recipient of the 2019 HSR&D Daniel Deykin Award for Outstanding Mentor, which is presented each year to an HSR&D researcher(s) who exhibits outstanding dedication in mentoring the next generation of researchers. 


John Burkhardt, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of emergency medicine, was selected as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar. He will be at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland teaching and conducting research about competency-based medical education.

HIGHLIGHTS

At the Winter Summit on Opioid Overdose Prevention: Emergency Care of the Post-Overdose Patient hosted by the U-M Injury Prevention Center, the Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network, and the Michigan Emergency Department Improvement Collaborative, more than 70 emergency medicine professionals from across Michigan gathered in East Lansing.  


This summit facilitated discussion among stakeholders on best practices and protocol development of post-opioid overdose care in the emergency department, with a specific focus on medication assisted treatment (MAT).

History shows that taking strong steps now to slow the spread of coronavirus will help communities and individuals. "An outbreak anywhere can go everywhere. We all need to pitch in to try to prevent cases both within ourselves and in our communities," said Howard Markel, M.D., Ph.D., the George E. Wantz Distinguished Professor of the History of Medicine and Director of the U-M Center for the History of Medicine.

 

The use of opioids to soothe the pain of a pulled tooth could be drastically reduced or eliminated altogether from dentistry, say Romesh Nalliah, M.H.C.M., D.D.S., clinical professor of dentistry, and 
Chad Brummett, M.D., associate professor of anesthesiology.
