We are Open!
Paint with Bob in his Studio in Arroyo Grande, California.
In this week’s Best of BobBlast, we are starting off in my studio during a Mentor Workshop Retreat!
In this workshop, I act as a mentor, rather than a “workshop instructor.” There are eight painters in this 4 day Mentor Workshop - eight very diversified voices and painting styles - In the video, you will see various themes and well-thought-out series of paintings.
The Mentor Retreats are fun and highly productive - lots of painting, good networking and camaraderie! We also have 5 day Loosen Up Studio Workshops and 4 day Figure Workshops with an undraped and costumed model.
Here is my 2021 Studio Workshop Schedule:
•July 26-30 - 5 day Loosen Up Workshop
•August 12-15 - Mentor Workshop
•August 19-22 - 4 day Figure Workshop
•August 25-29 - 5 day Loosen Up Workshop
•October 20-23 - Mentor Workshop
•November 4-8 - Sold Out
In prepping for attending a workshop like my Studio Mentor Workshop, it will help if you do the following:
- Have a plan. Decide what you are going to paint. Have a goal.
- Bring the materials you are planning to work with.
- Clear your calendar so you will not have distractions that will keep you from doing your work.
During the Mentor Retreats, I do many demonstrations of techniques and materials - the following is my “super loose beginning, painting a dark river bank” - yes really!
In this video - you can watch me demonstrate the following steps:
•On pre-gessoed paper, wipe very wet pigments of black, magenta and violet all over the surface, being careful to not scrub the colors into the surface
•While still wet, I use my fingernail to scribe into the wet paint - my version of narrow tree trunks, giving an immediate indication of trees along the riverbank
•This is how I begin. Loose, abstract and LOTS of wet pigment
•The first stage already has a swamp-ish atmosphere. Paint quickly and don’t over think
Don’t over think!
