Vermont's African American Heritage Trail Beckons...
Linda Cooper, Racial Justice Team

Your Racial Justice Team takes you to Hinesburg to learn about the Black Farmers of 1790-1890:
Saturday, August 15, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Leave from FUUSB at 9:45 a.m. to carpool with face masks and windows open (or meet the group by the Black Settlers Historic Marker in Hinesburg). Carpools will be limited to two people, one sitting in front, the other in back. Bring snacks and water for yourself.

From 1795 to 1865 an African American farming community thrived on Lincoln Hill in what we now know as Hinesburg. The first settlers at the bottom of the road in 1798, from Massachusetts, were Samuel Peters, Hannah Lensemen and husband Prince Peters. Prince served in Captain Silas Pierce's MA Line for three years during the American Revolution. Samuel Peters volunteered at the Battle of Plattsburgh during the War of 1812.

Violet and Shubael Clark, from Connecticut, arrived at the top of the hill in 1795. Their farm grew to 175 acres spilling over into Huntington, and one son owned 100 acres nearby. The original settlers expanded to five related families just before the Civil War; many are buried in an abandoned cemetery at the top of the hill.

We will go for a walk around Lincoln Hill (on a road) with historian Elise Guyette to see where the farms were, learn what their lives in Hinesburg were like, and see some of the remnants of the cemetery. Elise is author of Discovering Black Vermont: African American Farmers in Hinesburg, 1790-1890.

Maximum 20 adults, $10 each. Please sign up at this link

Fund in Memory of Kathleen Bonilla
Erika Reif, Director of Lifespan Faith Development

We are in the final days of our campaign in memory of our dear friend and FUUSB member, Kathy Bonilla. Saturday, August 15, marks the anniversary of her passing and the last day to donate to this fund. As many of you know, Kathy was raising two of her grandchildren, Mak and Andora, two wonderful young people who were so integral to the life of this congregation and who we all had hoped to see grow into adulthood here at FUUSB. So far, 42 individuals or families have donated over $3,500. If you haven't yet, please take this chance to wrap them in the warm arms of our community one last time, even as their life journey takes them far from us. Let us remind them that here they will always have a spiritual home. Here is the link to the GoFundMe page.

Late Summer Outdoor Vespers Services at FUUSB
Rev. David Ruffin

In these challenging times, while summer's abundant beauty is still with us, let us safely come together, in person, to renew our hearts in community. As nourishing as our online worship life has become, sometimes we just need to be in each other's physical presence. We may never have been more aware of how sacred that gift can be.

Though we cannot yet all come together in this way, beginning August 12 you are invited to join in small, socially distanced, outdoor Vespers services on Wednesday evenings. Gather under the cover of our new Memorial Garden canopy, for music and prayer, poetry and reflection, sharing and renewal, with Rev. David Ruffin and Director of Music, James Stewart.

Services will take place weekly, from Wed. Aug. 12 - Wed. Sept. 2, starting at 7 p.m. and lasting approximately 40 minutes. Registration will be opened the week prior to each service via REALM. Space is limited to 25 individuals, so don't wait. Please bring and wear your mask. Arrive early if you can, to check in and enjoy a meditative space of welcome. We look forward to seeing you.

Register for the August 19 service hereFor safety, participants are asked to review FUUSB's COVID Safety Checklist before attending a service.

New Fiscal Year Contributions
Christina Fulton, Director of Operations & Finance

Welcome to the 2020/2021 Fiscal Year! This is the perfect time for you to check your Realm account for two things:
  1. Make sure your 2019/2020 Fiscal Year Pledge is all paid up. If you would like to finish paying last year's pledge online, make sure to choose the 2019/2020 Pledge Year so that it is recorded in the proper year, or if you'd like to send in a check, please write the pledge year in the memo line of the check.
  2. Make sure your automatic payments have been updated for the new fiscal year. From the upper right corner of the Giving page in Realm, click on "Scheduled" to see if you currently have any automatic payments scheduled to happen. Don't assume that last year's payments have automatically continued for the new pledge year; many have not.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your pledge status, please email me at [email protected] or leave me a voicemail message at 802-862-5630, ext. 2200. Thank you so much for your continued support.

Nameless Contributions
Christina Fulton, Director of Operations & Finance

I have received a contribution for $1,200 in the form of a "Normal Retirement Plan Distribution," from an Ameriprise Financial account. This is wonderful! Unfortunately, the distribution check does not have a name attached to it, so I cannot credit it to anyone's pledge. If this sounds like it might be from you, please contact me ASAP at [email protected] or 802-862-5630, ext. 2200. And please remember, if you are making a gift of stock to the Society or giving via your retirement account, it is always necessary to contact me and let me know ahead of time. It is the only way for me to know where the gift is coming from. Thank you! - Christina

This is a stunning 5-minute video for the whole family that features graphic design and narration by members of the Navajo Nation (Diné). The translation is in a separate document below, along with the artist's bio. Please enjoy this glimpse into the interdependent web of existence rendered here!

In the above you will note reference to the "sacred pollen path"...curious? Here is an amusing and insightful article for parents and older kids that answers:

Reminder: Online Joys & Sorrows Form
purple-water-flowers.jpg
While in-person services are suspended due to the pandemic, we want to provide an alternative way for you to share your Joys & Sorrows with the congregation. An online Joys & Sorrows submission form is available at this link, and in each week's eNews (in the left margin). Joys & Sorrows will be shared in the service as much as possible. Since online services are available publicly on the FUUSB YouTube channel, we will not read full names or personal details. Thank you!
