St. Thomas Aquinas travels to Raytown Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Saints (2-0) are coming off a 41-35 win over Bishop Miege, and Raytown (3-1) has won three consecutive games, including 52-14 over Fort Osage last week.
After beginning the season with two familiar foes, St. James and Bishop Miege, Aquinas now faces Raytown, Shawnee Mission Northwest, Lawrence, Westside (Omaha), and Bishop Carroll (Wichita) in the coming weeks.
Raytown was a Missouri Class 5 state quarterfinalist in 2019.
"We're excited to be playing Raytown," said Aquinas coach Randy Dreiling. "We have the opportunity this season to play some teams we don't usually play. Raytown will be another challenge for us. They have as much size and talent as we have seen in a long time."
Last week, the Saints won their third consecutive game over Miege with physical play on both sides of the ball. Aquinas gained every yard of offense on the ground, and the defense compiled eight sacks and nine tackles for loss.
"The running game worked well last week," said Dreiling. "We had great effort on the offensive line, and we ran hard. We will continue to try to find ways to move the ball each week."
Through two games, the Saints have 807 yards of offense, 778 of which is rushing. On defense, Aquinas has yielded 581 yards, including just 157 rushing.
"Our defense is coming together," said Dreiling. "We have very experienced players on defense, as well as some first-year starters. Our coaches and players are doing a great job of putting it together."
The Saints are winning time of possession 57-39 and last week limited penalties to three for 40 yards. They have one turnover.
Three players have double-digit carries, led by senior fullback Tyron "Tank" Young. Young has 483 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 61 carries. Senior quarterback Blake Anderson has 152 yards on 34 carries. Sophomore fullback Sean Carroll has 81 yards on 14 carries.
In the passing game, Evan Kammerer has a touchdown catch.
On defense, after its dominating performance against Bishop Miege, the defensive line leads the tackle chart. Cameron Penny has two sacks and seven hurries. Sa'o Siavi'i has two sacks and four tackles for loss. Jalen Marshall has two sacks, two tackles for loss, and six hurries. Finally, Caden Reeves has two sacks, two tackles for loss, and seven hurries.
