THIS SUNDAY'S SERVICE
SAM BESHERS, JANET REVELL BARRETT
Sunday, August 16 at 10:15 a.m. via Live-stream

For many, the start of the school year welcomes new beginnings. This fall, however, we arrive at this point after the most unusual summer in memory—in which the isolation of the pandemic, the turning point of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the uncertainty surrounding school openings have left us wondering about the road ahead. This service, inspired by a Beatles’ tune, will look to the past to reflect on the school desegregation movement of the 1950s; the present, through the challenges of public service as a school board member; and the future, as secondary school teachers look ahead to the coming year.

UPCOMING SUNDAY SERVICES
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW
Sunday, August 23 at 10:15 a.m. via Live-stream

This summer we lost Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights hero, a man of towering moral integrity, and member of Congress for 33 years. When he died the whole nation mourned, and four former presidents offered words of gratitude and admiration at his funeral service. In this service we will celebrate, learn from, and be inspired by his life and words.

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

It is true that lifespan religious education will look different this fall. Yet, like every year, religious education programs only work when there is a solid team of leadership guiding, planning, creating and leading. Currently, a religious education think tank is looking at all aspects of religious education and discussing various options. Below is a list of the programs that seem to carry the most interest. To make these happen, we need leadership teams. UUCUC'S "BUDDY SYSTEM"
Staying connected while
UUCUC facilities are closed

During this time of social distancing, staying in touch and checking in with each other is going to be very important. We hope you will consider being part of our "Buddy System" so we can care for one another.

You can sign up here: https://uucuc.breezechms.com/form/2184f1. Buddies will check in with each other regularly by phone to provide connection, companionship, and connections to help if needed. This is a great way to help each other.
JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, August 9.

From Sam Beshers and Lynn Wiley: Our daughter Caroline started medical school orientation at UI Chicago on Thursday. She had a great first day! Her program head may be a UU; she talked about interdependence and the worth of every person.

From Sandy and Jim Hannum: We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Noel Brodsky. Please keep wife Ann, and their daughters, Ariana, Serena, and Alyssa, in your thoughts and prayers., They were active in our church a few years ago. Noel is remembered as a lively, interesting, outgoing man. Deepest condolences to the family.

From Sandy and Jim Hannum: We’re concerned for Cindy Loui because of the unexpected death of her younger cousin last week. Our thoughts are with her, Michael, and their family.

From Sandy and Jim Hannum: We celebrate Theresa Benson's transition to private practice in Champaign from her previous job at the University of Illinois. Best wishes!

From Priscilla Kron and Jerry Frye: We celebrated my sister’s birthday on FaceTime today. She turned 80 and we enjoyed cake, ice cream and coffee.

From Julie Laut: I am proud to share that I was sworn in as Urbana City Council's newest member on Tuesday. Though I have a great deal to learn before I'm fully up to speed, I look forward to doing what I can to support our community in the coming months. And, I offer my sincere gratitude to the entire UUCUC community, which has helped me develop the experience and confidence to take on this new leadership position.

From Amy Robison: My 89-year-old mother-in-law entered the hospital Friday with very low blood sodium. We have not been able to visit her at her Pennsylvania assisted living facility for many months.

From Umeeta Sadarangani and Marilyn Ryan: We’re happy to report that Umeeta's father came home from the hospital on Tuesday--even if it was just in time for the 48-hour power outage that began right after, thanks to the hurricane. But now he has electricity and is recovering from pneumonia. Hurray!

Please send your joys and sorrows to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org in advance of the service each week, by 5:00 p.m. on Fridays.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE
UUCUC Social Action Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive offerings from our congregation. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

During the month of August, we will support the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. The Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a non-partisan movement to advocate for stronger gun laws. 36,000+ people per year die from gun deaths through mass shootings, suicide, domestic abuse, and accidental shootings. Solutions to gun violence are straightforward: stronger background checks, holding the gun industry accountable, removing guns from domestic abusers and suicidal people, and stopping gun trafficking and the sale of military grade weapons.
