Superyacht Charter Demand Has Never Been Higher

The yacht charter market is much less confused than last year, but some of the most popular destinations are still muddied by COVID uncertainty. Many yachts that usually head across the Atlantic are staying in the US or Bahamas, unsure when France and Italy will open to charter vessels, or with another COVID wave, whether they’ll stay open.

Despite the uncertainty, many brokers are expecting a record season and report many of their top vessels are booked out. “This will be a summer like we have not seen since the early 2000’s,” Robert Shepherd, partner at Edmiston, told Robb Report, pointing to a rise in personal wealth among high-net-worth individuals. “We have also seen an unprecedented amount of yacht sales, which has brought a new selection of yachts to the market for charter.”

US Slams EU Plans to Double 25% Yacht Import Tax

American yacht and engine builders have again called on the Biden administration to step in and stop a 25% EU tariff on yacht and engine imports from doubling to 50% next month.

As it stands, from June 1 all boat and engine imports from America to the EU will be subject to a 50% tariff, double the current rate imposed in 2018.

The 25% tax resulted in US boat and engine exports to the continent plummeting since its enforcement three years ago.

Dates for Nice Superyacht Event Announced

The Leading Yacht Brokers Association (LYBRA) and the European Committee for Professional Yachting (ECPY) have announced that they will host an event at the Nice Port from 22nd to 24th June.

Though the exact details of the yacht show have not yet been released, the organisers of the event have revealed to SuperYacht Times that the event will forego the traditional format of a yacht show, focusing primarily on yachts for sale and will not have any company stands. The event is poised to display as many as 23 superyachts.

In accordance with concerns of the Covid-19 pandemic, participants must be registered with a LYBRA broker prior to the event. Other industry professionals are welcome, but must be registered with ECPY.

New Zealand Opens to Yachts from Australia Within Existing Travel Bubble

With a trans-Tasman travel bubble now in place and working between the Australian states and New Zealand, NZ Marine Industry Association has clarified the changed entry situation between the two countries for cruising yachts and superyachts.

The new position lies within existing regulations, and reflects the more relaxed and changing entry situation for tourists and temporary visitors entering Australia and New Zealand.

“We have been waiting over a year now and are very excited that yachts and their owners plus friends and families leaving from Australia, can enjoy sailing in New Zealand,” said NZ marine's CEO Peter Busfield.

Genoa Superyacht Hub Project Launched

Amico & Co and Pesto Sea Group have joined their resources and services to promote Genoa as the ideal year-round homeport for superyachts. While Genoa is already one of the world’s most important superyacht locations, Genoa intends to strengthen its proposition with various infrastructure investments and a project to promote the area internationally.

The project has been created to promote the companies that exist in and around Genoa, as well as promoting the “cultural and environmental characteristics and quality of life” that the Genoese territory, Liguria and Northern Italy, in general, have to offer.

Genoa Superyacht Hub aims to target yacht owners and captains, yacht and charter managers, crew members and technical staff by responding to their individual requirements and highlighting how the necessary services and structures are woven into the fabric of Genoa itself, making it the ideal homeport location.

Inaugural Caribbean Charter Yacht Show Announced for December

The International Yacht Brokers Association (IYBA) and IGY Marinas have announced that they will host the first-ever Caribbean Charter Yacht Show (CCYS) at Yacht Haven Grande in St. Thomas, USVI from 9th-12th December.

The CCYS will target the charter sector of the yachting industry. The event is anticipated to host as many as 50 superyachts, ranging from 24 to 137-metres, as well as charter brokers from all over the world and an array of exhibits, highlighting services available to the charter industry.

On the decision to host an event aimed at the charter sector, specifically, IYBA’s President Bob Saxon says, “While the need for certain large scale superyacht trade shows remains, we believe that an opportunity exists to begin to reset the boat show model and annual calendar with more targeted events like this.”
