As we welcome the New Year and new semester, Student Financial Services wants to remind you about some important financial related topics for 2022.
Time to file your 1098-T
Students whose scholarships/grants exceed "qualified education expenses" such as tuition, mandatory fees, and books and supplies may owe taxes on this amount. Student accounting will issue 1098-T’s this month via WebSTAC, but WashU cannot determine your tax liability.
First, refer to the IRS Publication 970 to determine if you need to file a tax return. If it is determined you need to file we recommend you consult a tax preparer or utilize the free Gateway EITC Community Coalition for tax preparation. If you are unable to pay your tax liability from scholarships and grants, talk to your SFS counselor. Note: They will need the first two pages of your 2021 tax returns.
Additional reminders for 2022:
Renew your financial aid – All FAFSA’s must be filed by March 31 to renew your aid. You will receive your new offer by May 15 (unless you opted for early renewal). You can renew online or on mobile.
Don’t forget to let SFS know about any new special circumstances by submitting the 2022-2023 Financial Aid Special Circumstances form.
You can review your financial assistance offer in NetPartner using your WUSTL Key.
Once you review your award, make sure you accept it in NetPartner!
