“From Mary we learn to surrender to God's will in all things. From Mary we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone.”
— St. John Paul II
“As mariners are
guided into port by the
shining of a star, so
Christians are guided
to heaven by Mary.”
— St. Thomas Aquinas
The Rites of May
It is in the month of May that Catholics pay particularly prayerful tribute to the Blessed Mother, carrying on traditions dating back to the 17th Century and supported in more modern times by Popes Paul VI and Pius XII. Marian hymns, scripture readings, sermons and small ceremonies have traditionally been part of family, school and church life each May. Among these special devotions are the May crownings and altars participated in and prepared by many of our Sisters, first as students and later as teachers.
“A long winding procession and a gift of fragrant flowers are the
students’ tribute to Our Lady each year on Coronation Day. With dignity
and loveliness this traditional rite is performed a symbol of love
and loyalty to Mary, our model of womanly perfection.”
— 1946 Mount Assisi Academy Chimes Yearbook

A Song
The Queen of the May hymn is set against a collage of children crowning the Blessed Mother in a short video that harkens back to those elementary school days.

Woman, Mother of God
An excerpt from the poem Women of God by Sister Barbara DeStefano

Woman of all women, you are a model of faith for us.
You had the openness to hear an angel, the courage to say “Yes” to your God
even in the midst of judgment and danger,
and the wisdom “to ponder all these things in your heart.”
Whether you found yourself at the stable crib, or the passion cross,
at the holy city temple, or the Cana wedding,
your relationship with Jesus, was shown to be intimate and faithful.
We praise God for you.
