FAU’s “University of Distinction” plan for applied artificial intelligence and big data analytics was officially approved today by the  Florida Board of Governors, which oversees the State University System. This official distinction will enhance and expand degree offerings at the University and promote AI and data-driven engagement with its region’s technology industry. The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College launched both a major concentration in data analytics and a minor concentration in data science, which focuses on disciplinary knowledge and the emerging field of the ethics of data use.

Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur campus celebrated its 20th anniversary with a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new FAU Neuroscience Building and residence hall. The construction aims to further expand the University’s research footprint and academic offerings in Jupiter.

The Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University hosted a panel discussion between representatives of different faith backgrounds on the issue of gun violence, specifically the problem of mass shootings. The College hosted this event in an effort to understand this problem better and explore potential solutions to these recurring tragedies in American life. The panelists included Rabbi Barry Silver of Congregation L’Dor Va-Dor in Boynton Beach; Reverend Melissa Pierce of Generation Church in Jupiter; and Father John D'Mello of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Palm Beach Gardens. The panel was moderated by Christopher Strain, Ph.D., professor of History and American Studies and author of the book Reload: Rethinking Violence in American Life. Carmen Cañete Quesada, Ph.D., an associate professor of Spanish in the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of FAU recently participated in the Schomburg Center Scholars-in-Residence Program. Dr. Cañete Quesada conducted archival research regarding the involvement of African Americans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). This Fall Dr. Cañete Quesada located invaluable archival material in the Schomburg Center, the Tamiment Library at NYU, and the Spanish Refugee Relief Association Records at Columbia University. On November 20, Dr. Cañete Quesada presented “African Americans and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).” Her research seeks to increase awareness of the African-American volunteers of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade (ALB), its motivations, experiences and struggles, and the ideals for which its members fought during the Spanish conflict... Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FAU Jupiter

In this new installment in the phone book series, Hagood will bring alive one of the most graceful cities of the United States. Few places in the country can match the history and panache of Charleston, South Carolina. From important battle sites to haunted gardens, from great eateries to clothing stores that have made this city the best dressed, and, with interesting citizens both famous and obscure, real and imagined, this one-time event will present this beautiful and magical place.


One of the most politically-charged questions in American history deals with how the administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt reacted to the Nazis. In this newly revised and updated presentation, Professor Nurnberger will review many of the specific examples of actions taken — and not taken — by the Roosevelt Administration, as well as the rationale behind these decisions.

China has thus far been careful not to affect American national interest in the Middle East. However, China’s recent build-up of military and intelligence capabilities in the region, together with its massive investment, is inadvertently or intentionally deepening Chinese influence in the Middle East. This lecture emphasizes, against the background of Chinese policy in the Middle East, the strategic vulnerabilities Chinese investments in Israel have created.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter has announced its course offerings for the winter semester, which begins Monday, Jan. 6, 2020. The John D. MacArthur Campus presently enrolls more than 1,500 students and offers groundbreaking programs in research and education.
