NEW SAFE SPORT REQUIREMENTS

T here is a new mandatory requirement for players 17 years of age or older on or before December 31, 2019.  These players are now required to complete the SafeSport Program before they can be rostered to play this fall.

The program is free and takes approximately 90 minutes to complete online.

Please read the following information we received from AHAI. Details on how to register and take the course are listed below.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

The United States government enacted the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and SafeSport Authorization Act of 2017 on February 14th, 2018. USA Hockey has been working on addressing the changes necessary for the USA Hockey SafeSport Program based on this Act.

The changes approved at the USA Hockey Annual Congress last week will directly impact your organization and its members. As you are aware, all staff 18 years and older including volunteers, coaches and managers are required to complete SafeSport training before they can be added to a team roster.

Because USA Hockey does not want players or officials turning 18 to become ineligible in the middle of a season, USA Hockey is requiring all players 17 years of age or older on or before December 31st of that playing season, and who play on a team in a classification that allows minor aged players, to complete SafeSport Training before being added to the team, and prior to participation with the team (on-ice or off-ice). This requirement applies to all teams in the age classifications Youth, High School, Junior Hockey, Flex Hockey and Disabled Hockey programs that allow both minor age and adult age players (anyone over 18 years and older).

If a player is in the group identified above, and they have not completed the SafeSport Training, they will be "greyed out" and will not be able to be placed on the team's roster in the USA Hockey registration portal until they have completed the training. This will prevent them from being on the Official Roster. They may not participate with the team until they can be added to the roster.

The program takes about 90 minutes to complete online. Once the fall season is underway, the players will be consumed with school, hockey, and other commitments. It is to their advantage to take the SafeSport Program NOW and not wait until it is time to be placed on a roster and games are starting.

The SafeSport Program is free. You must have a USAH Registration Confirmation Number to register to take the training. Players registered with USAH for the 2018/19 season can use the USA Hockey Confirmation Number for that season (which is valid until August 31, 2019) to register to take the training. They may also register with USA Hockey for the 2019/20 and use that confirmation number to register for the course. Registration for the SafeSport Program after September 1, 2019 requires a 2019/20 USA Hockey Registration.

To take the SafeSport Program, access the online program via the USA Hockey Website https://www.usahockey.com/safesporttraining . Or use this direct link to access the SafeSport site: https://safesport.org/authentication/register?token=71d4f2f9-bddb-4e6d-bb2a-37211b8999d9

Like the requirement this year to complete SafeSport, we anticipate additional changes regarding screening in the 2020/2021 season. At the present time, for the 2019/20 season, there is not a requirement for these individuals to be screened.

Thank you for your support to inform your members of this new requirement. With our joined effort we hope to make this as easy as possible to your members and the least disruptive in allowing this age group to be placed on rosters without missing any team activities such as practice or games.
WELCOME TO THE SABRES, BRENT SOPEL

COACHES CORNER -- BY MIKE MCGINNIS

Coaches Corner - Congrats to the Female Athlete

Just last weekend, the United States Women's soccer team won the World Cup! Although we have won the World Cup three times before, this year's tournament was far more competitive across the board and our team was far more dominate then previous showings. But this is not just a celebration for women in soccer, it is a celebration for all women in all sports and it starts at the youth level.
In 1972, when Title IX was enacted, there were just 700 girls playing high school soccer and in 2018 there were 390,482 high school female soccer players. Participation has built success and that success will continue to increase participation. We have seen soccer grow through institutional support, professional development, and education of the sport. When given the opportunity, the talents and passions of individuals can be fostered to create great team success.

We actively see this growth and support in women's hockey as well. Women's hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the world with record-setting television audiences for gold medal games and the continued involvement of NHL teams with pro women's teams. Today there are 79,355 women registered with USA hockey. In fact, the registration of females in youth hockey is growing 6.5 times faster than their male counterparts, and males continue to grow as well. Just last year we nearly saw a 10% increase across the country in women's hockey. This growth is also seen at the international level with 86,925 female players currently in Canada, 6,527 players in Finland and 5,505 players in Sweden.

In many ways, women's hockey is still just getting started and we will see this sport continue to grow and succeed. The Sabre organization is proud to be a part of women's hockey and we are making big strides as well to build our program to lead and promote further growth and development in women's hockey. Mike Campbell, our girl's director, anticipates significant growth in our numbers this year and we cannot be more excited. It is important to recognize and support the growth, passion, and energy we are feeling in women's hockey. Also as an organization and as individuals, it is equally as important to fully embrace, support, and cheer for all our current and future success.
