Sustainability Update

In February Herbalist & Alchemist made commitments to reduce our impact in the areas of agriculture and packaging. In March, COVID-19 hit full force, putting our planning on hold as we focused on meeting  customer's needs and keeping staff healthy and safe. Fortunately, we've been able to resume work on this program recently, and here's what we're doing:

Agriculture:
We will be gathering more robust and detailed information from our herb suppliers about how they farm, and what regenerative practices they use, so that we can build on that knowledge. The survey is in draft form. We already know that many of our growers practice regenerative methods which keep carbon in the soil. This is very much a focus on ensuring we increase "carbon farming" in our supply chain.

Packaging:
In fall 2019 we started re-using boxes and filler from incoming shipments to ship out product, which lessened the amount of virgin cardboard boxes we use. To reduce single use plastic we changed to tamper evident seals on bottles, replacing the plastic film seals which also used more energy because they required a heat application. We also eliminated the plastic seal on our kit boxes.

We are now focusing on secondary packaging (shipping containers etc.), finding ways to reduce the overall footprint of shipments.
After watching a webinar, hosted by Climate Collaborative, about a company that reduced their footprint significantly by decreasing the volume of packaging, we were inspired. We have researched alternatives to bubble wrap, such as a paper-based wrap that is 100% recyclable. We're in communication with a potential vendor but on site meetings to review alternatives are on hold for now, hopefully to be replaced by Zoom demos soon.  We're also on the lookout for a more sustainable label for the bottle, but this is still in the idea phase.
