A community of Christian worship, well-being and service

     Social Distancing ~  Spiritually Connecting
Love brings new life from death.

The weekend of March 20-22

A message from the Rector

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

This weekend we will hear the gospel story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead.  It is a story in which there is a crisis, Lazarus is gravely ill. There are some very human responses to the crisis. And then there is Jesus, who proclaims himself as the resurrection and the life. What we experience in this good news is that Jesus is the love that brings new life from death. His love and compassion are present and real, not only long ago, but right now.

We are blessed to be able to ponder this story of the raising of Lazarus at this moment in history. There is so much that has been lost in these days of sickness and uncertainty. Understandably, we have a range of emotions and reactions as we try to keep up with what is happening and take care of ourselves, our loved ones and our church. Even in these early days of the crisis, new life is emerging from the losses. Look for it.

As a church we are trying to reach out to each other and make sure that each member and friend knows that they are a part of the Body of Christ. Please remember that you matter here, even as we are physically apart. Take best care of yourself and know that God is very present.

Faithfully,
Jennifer+

Worship
In this time of social distancing,
we continue to connect as the beloved worshiping community.

Our weekly bulletins and the video worship services are posted on our website.

Watch your inbox on Saturday evening for the email that will contain the live links to the bulletin and video worship for this Sunday's service.  We hope to worship together virtually, Sunday at 9 a.m., but once the link goes live, you will be able to worship at your convenience.

This weekend we give thanks for the ministries of Michael Templeton for offering music that connects us to God, to Dave Brierley for his reading, technical skill and production. I will be the preacher.

Blessings, Jennifer+

Our Worship this weekend will be Morning Prayer , Rite Two,  from the Book of Common Prayer, page. 75.

The Book of Common Prayer , which has many useful prayers for home use and community worship may be found  here.

The Collect for the fifth week of Lent:

A lmighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Well-being

Do you need groceries, errands or help with something else?

If you need something, please contact the head of our Pastoral Care Team, Pauline Davis. Her email address is [email protected]
You may also phone her at 401-363-1475,
but she would prefer an email if you are able.

Service

Teens home from high school or college,
join in serving your church community.

If you are a teen or college student interested in helping  others by student who would like to serve  running and errand, getting groceries, or helping in some other way, please contact  Jenny Williams.

Soup Kitchen Ministry Continues

Our service to our neighbors continues.  The team will be collecting food differently and assembling bagged suppers, rather than serving meals on April 9th.  David Brierly will be leading this effort and you can contact him here if you would like to help.

Our ministry to the MLK Community Center

Our friends at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center can not receive food donations or volunteer support at this time.  If you can make a monetary donation, that is what they truly need.  Please click here to donate.
Keeping our mission going through giving
Giving and Receiving Opportunities

We are the church, continuing to share the love of God in Christ, especially during this wilderness time.

Your giving supports our common life as a church and the ministry we offer to our members and the wider community.

Though we do not have an offering plate handy,  there are several easy ways to give.
  • You may go to our web page and Give Online
  • You can mail in pledge payments or financial gifts to St. Mary's Church, 324 E. Main Rd., Portsmouth, RI 02871.
  • You can set up online bill pay through your bank.
We are sensitive to the realities of the economy and personal finances of our members during this time. If for any reason you are not able to maintain your pledge, please contact the rector. This will enable us to adjust our income projections so that we can be good stewards of our resources.

If you find yourself in financial need, please contact the rector. St. Mary's has a discretionary fund, which is used by the rector to offer support for the needs of our members. Members contribute to this fund anonymously, and members may receive support confidentially.

We will all get through this challenging time, and God will provide. Please continue to give thanks for all God has entrusted to you and to our church.
