Tips to Keep Your Home Safe for All

October 2019

Fall Back with Daylight Savings on November 3rd!

November 3rd is when Daylight Savings ends and we 'fall back.'  It will be lighter in the morning but darker in the afternoons. Remember to put your outside lights on for a safe entrance into the home. Use the occasion of setting your clocks back as a cue to change your batteries on your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms as well seeing if your fire extinguisher batteries need replacing.

One thing to consider is to have a safety assessment done by Home Healthsmith.  We can help you determine where the fall risks are in the home and help you prepare the home for the upcoming winter season.

Be on the lookout for some big changes that are happening at our facility!  We are excited about working with Rhode Island Kitchen & Bath and Wickford Appliance to show the various ways that you can make your kitchen accessible.

If you are interested in learning more about the various types of accessibility products, please give us a call to schedule a presentation or stop by our facility at 207 High Point Ave., Unit 2 in Portsmouth, RI.

We are here to help!

4 Flooring Product Suggestions for
Safe Aging in Place Kitchens and Bathrooms

When it comes to aging in place, kitchens and bathrooms are two of the most dangerous areas of the home.

Most of us spend a considerable amount of time in these rooms, and both of these rooms have multiple water sources, including  faucets. As a result, there is a high propensity for wet floors. And because carpeting is atypical for these rooms, the flooring is usually hard, leaving very little cushioning in the event of falls. In an effort to address this issue, many people like to use throw rugs in front of sinks, tubs, or showers, but using substandard products can increase the likelihood of slips, trips, and falls.

"Universal Design Should Focus More On
The Universal Than The Design"

True universal design is inclusive. It accommodates as many people as are reasonably possible - regardless of whom might be present most of the time or for whom the design is intended. Anyone who has any degree of independence, no matter how limited that might be or what they might depend upon for assistance, comes under the general framework of universal design - and we need to accommodate them.
