PLANS FOR SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH
NO ZOOM FELLOWSHIP OR CLASS DUE
TO LABOR DAY WEEKEND
The sermon on Sunday, September 6, “The Life of the Church,” is based on Matthew 18:15-20. Tom Long, who taught for many years at Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, comments on this passage: “Matthew has no romantic illusions about the church. He knows that the church is not all sweet thoughts, endlessly patient saints, and cloudless skies. In Matthew’s church, people—no matter how committed—are still people, and stormy weather is always a possible forecast. ‘Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love,’ we sing; but even so painful breaks can occur in once tender and loving relationships. ‘We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,’ but greed, lust and envy can threaten to shake even a strong church off its footing. What happens when the menu at church includes such unwelcome entrees as rage, hatred and betrayal?” The 30-minute service will be posted on the church website and the link sent directly to our members.
Since it is the first Sunday of the month, a Zoom service with Holy Communion will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Deiphi Sian will read the morning’s text, Luke 15:1-10, Katy Keyes will sing, and Neel Foster will lead the Prayers of the People. Email [email protected] and request the Zoom link. Before the service gather juice and bread as together we celebrate the sacrament.
Looking to Rally Day, September 13… The Session has approved a one-time in-person service of worship, “The Horse and the Rider,” to launch the program year. We will return to a virtual worship format on September 20. The day’s Scripture, Exodus 15:1-11, 20-21, records the songs of Moses and Miriam after the Israelites are delivered from the pursuing army of
Pharaoh. Early next week, you will receive more details about the service as well as how to make reservations to attend. Temperature checks, masks and social distancing will be required.
Request for Photos! A photo collage is being assembled and set to music for Rally Day, September 13. The theme of the video will be, “What I Did This Summer.” Send two or three
photos to [email protected] by the September 10 deadline.
