International Congress on Pathogens at the Human-Animal Interface

The fifth biennial International Congress on Pathogens at the Human-Animal Interface (ICOPHAI) took place from September 24-26 in Québec City, Canada. Scientists, faculty and professionals from universities, the private sectors and governments from around the world gathered to discuss new challenges of applying the One Health approach in a changing environment. Presenters represented more than 16 countries including Brazil, Burkina Faso, Canada, Cote D'Ivoire, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan, Senegal, Somalia, Tanzania, United States and Vietnam. The congress concluded by selecting the next two ICOPHAI congress host countries, France (2021) and Mexico (2023).

Third Planetary Health Alliance Annual Meeting

GOHi joined representatives from universities, NGOs and other partners from over 30 countries at Stanford University from September 4-6 to discuss advancing planetary health. Planetary health is an interdisciplinary field focused on characterizing the human health impacts of human-caused disruptions of earth's natural systems and highly engages One Health concepts and disciplines.

Clinical specimen collection training in Addis Ababa

From August 25-27, GOHi faculty members, Jennifer Kue, Joan-Miquel Balada-Llasat and Getnet Yimer helped train 24 health professionals in clinical specimen collection at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute in Addis Ababa. This training is part of GOHis multiyear cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions Global Health Security Agenda work in Eastern Africa.

GOHi hosts Ethiopian regional team and Brazilian partners in Columbus

GOHi's Regional Director Getnet Yimer and Associate Regional Director Desalegne Degefaw along with partners from the Federal University of Paraíba, Celso Oliveira, and from the Federal University of Paraná, Rafael Vieira, joined the GOHi team in Columbus, Ohio for a week of strategic meetings, guest lectures, advisory committees and presentations. Strengthening our partnership with Brazilian and Ethiopian colleagues is a key objective of GOHi's outreach and extension capacity. While in Columbus, the global partners participated in a team building professional development workshop along the GOHi staff.

Farewell to GOHi colleagues

We recognize and appreciate the many contributions of Mostafa Ghanem, DVM, PhD, infectious disease molecular epidemiology laboratory genotyping coordinator who saved so many poultry lives in Ohio as part of his role, and wish him well as he accepts a tenure-track faculty position as assistant professor at the University of Maryland. GOHi is also grateful to Tewodros Abebe, former Eastern Africa regional operations manager, who departed GOHi September 27. Both Ghanem and Tewodros contributed immensely in achieving the mission and vision of GOHi.
