Get Six of One or
A Half Dozen of Another!
September 2020

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Not only is it a time to take stock and give thanks, it marks a turning point in seasons. We trade our t-shirts for sweaters, our sandals for boots, and al fresco dining winds down. Back around the dining room table, the menu shifts to comfort foods and cold-weather favourites. Likewise, the rosés and lighter wines of the summer make way for fuller-bodied, richer wines to pair with the heartier fare.

While the idea of endless summer does hold some appeal, there's nothing quite like the warmth and coziness of a harvest-time meal and uncorking a big, bold white or a rich, spicy red.  In that seasonal spirit, we're featuring some of our favourite wines available by the case of six. A case (or two!) of these is just the thing to take you through Thanksgiving, and the crisper days beyond.

Our full pricelist can be found here.

To order you can simply reply to this e-mail or call me, 416 961 2294 x 29. (If the line is busy, please leave a message.)

I've enlisted two of my sommelier colleagues to help me reply to your requests and schedule your orders in a timely manner: you may hear back from Alison Lee or Elizabeth Clinton as well.

Lis Neris "Jurosa" Chardonnay 2016
$52.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
6 cases in stock

One of the more singular Chardonnays I've come across, "Jurosa" is a single-vineyard on the windswept coast of Friuli in north-eastern Italy.  The wine is fermented in barrel, and once this is completed the wine is not racked (removed off the yeast), but left in this barrel for 11 months.  The lees (yeast) are stirred often to develop protein in the wine, leading to a creamy mouthfeel that still shows bright Friulian acidity.  Simply a world-class Chardonnay by any measure!

"This is a terrific expression of this versatile French grape. The 2016 Friuli Isonzo Chardonnay Jurosa is fairly structured but lightweight in the mouth, with brilliant energy and an open, zesty personality. Orchard fruit, ripe peach, toasted nut, lemon mousse and creamy vanilla all conspire to create the beautiful bouquet. I would suggest drinking this wine within the next few years; however, this sample has the fiber and balanced acidity to withstand some near-term aging. Some 55,000 bottles were created."

Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils.
"Les Clos" Grand Cru
"Clos des Hospices" 2018
$149.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
4 cases in stock

"Clos des Hospices" is a half-hectare section of the top Chablis Grand Cru - Les Clos.  It was bought by the Moreau family from the Hospices of Chablis in 1904.  The vines producing there now average over 40 years of age.

It sits at the bottom of the slope, with the same south exposure and clay-limestone soil of Les Clos.  It benefits from more erosion, deeper soil and is even more predominantly composed of fine clay. It produces an exceptional full-bodied and generous wine.

"The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Clos des Hospices Grand Cru is vivid, nuanced and wonderfully vibrant. It is also the wine that really captures the Moreau style at its best. Lemon confit, almond, chamomile and a touch of new oak open up in a supple, silky Clos loaded with personality. Radiant and yet reserved, with mid-weight structure, the Clos des Hospices is absolutely exquisite in its beauty. The Clos des Hospices emerges from a half hectare parcel on the lower slope of the Clos hillside and is done entirely in oak."

Domaine des Baumard
Savennières "Clos du Papillon" 2015
$77.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
4 cases in stock

"Tucked away in the village of Rochefort-sur-Loire, just south of the town of Savennières is Domaine des Baumard. The property has been in the Baumard family since 1634, but was revitalized by Jean Baumard in the mid-1950s. Now managed by Jean's son Florent, the Domaine is considered one of the top producers in the Loire Valley and a reference point for Savennières and the sweet wines of Coteaux du Layon."
Pierre Rovani, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Clos du Papillon" is arguably the most prized vineyard in Savennières. The south-facing parcel gets its name from its shape: when viewed from the opposite bank of the Loire River, it resembles the shape of a butterfly's wing.  The fruit is hand-picked over multiple passes through the vineyard and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel to retain purity of flavour.

This 2015 is a masterclass in Savennières from a winemaker at the top of his game. It is a powerful wine, yet distinctly fresh and full of minerality with all of the richness and elegance you should expect from Chenin Blanc grown on such great terroir.  Any true wine-nerd, like me, who wants to understand definitive Savennières should have the 2015 in the cellar.

"This is very alluring, with salted butter, blanched almond and tarragon highlights amid the core of creamed pear, green plum and white ginger flavours. The distinctive mouthfeel combines creamy and zesty elements, while racy minerality extends the finish. Drink now through 2035."

Chateau Montelena
Napa Valley Chardonnay 2017
$84.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
11 cases in stock

I'm sure you've heard the story of Steven Spurrier's "1976 Paris Tasting" a million times, so I won't rehash it here.  But suffice it to say, the winning white, Chateau Montelena's Napa Valley Chardonnay has not changed much since then.  Still a non-malolactic, barrel fermented Chardonnay, it drinks like Grand Cru Chablis, and ages for up to a decade with ease.

"Montelena's 2017 Chardonnay is bright, focused and tightly wound, with tons of citrus peel, orchard fruit and floral character. Medium in body, with terrific energy underpinning the fruit, the 2017 is a winner. Picking early and blocking the malolactic fermentation yields a finely sculpted, nuanced Chardonnay long on class. I loved it. Readers who enjoy classically built wines will find much to admire in these new releases from Chateau Montelena."

Paul Hobbs "Ross Station"
Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2017
$137.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
6 cases in stock

This vineyard is located in the Green Valley sub-appellation of Russian River Valley.  It surrounds an historic Victorian home built by the Ross family in the late 1850's, where they grew grapes, apples and peaches for a time before it became a busy stagecoach station.  This wine displays aromas of ginger and citrus. It has a full-bodied palate of Asian pear and toasted brioche with notes of wet stone giving way to a vibrant, lengthy finish.

"One of the standouts is the 2017 Chardonnay Ross Station Estate and it has an incredibly polished, elegant, regal style as well as notes of tangerine, white peach, flowers, and honeysuckle. The texture here is first rate and it just glides over the palate with both freshness and richness. It's already drinking beautifully yet should cruise for 7-8 years or longer in cool cellars."
96 points, JebDunnuck.com, June 2019

"Well-sculpted and elegant, featuring concentrated baked apple, pear tart and white berry flavours that are layered with richly spiced and toasty notes. The plush finish is pure, offering seductive sage cream and honeyed details. Drink now through 2025. 339 cases made."

Produttori Del Barbaresco
"Pora" Riserva DOCG 2015
$94.95 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
6 cases in stock

"Underbrush, wild herb and dark-skinned-berry aromas form the nose along with a whiff of camphor. On the firm, structured palate, tightly knit but noble tannins offset dried Marasca cherry, cranberry, orange zest and star anise. Tense and youthfully austere, it needs a few years to unwind. Drink 2022-2027."
95 points, Wine Enthusiast, Jan 2020

"A mix of black cherry, mint, eucalyptus and tar flavours highlight this firmly structured Barbaresco, which nonetheless remains fresh and focused, with a line of dense tannins lifting the long finish. Best from 2023 through 2043."
94 points, Wine Spectator, Sept 2020

Avignonesi
Alleanza "Poggetto di Sopra"
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2015
$124.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
2 cases in stock

"From a single vineyard, the 2015 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Poggetto di Sopra is a pure expression of Sangiovese. Only 3,000 bottles were made. The fruit is organic, and the wine ferments on ambient yeasts (whole cluster) with up to 25 days of skin contact. It ages in oak for two years. This is an extraordinarily pure expression of the grape from a warm vintage in which its natural fruit characteristics of cherry and wild raspberry come forth with intensity and power. It is a mid-weight expression that carefully balances the power of the vintage against the extremely elegant and graceful house style achieved at Avignonesi."
95 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2019

"Alluring aromas of black-skinned berry, forest floor, oak and exotic spice shape the nose. On the elegantly structured, focused palate, polished fine-grained tannins support dried black cherry, raspberry compote, clove and cinnamon while a hint of espresso lingers on the close. It's already tempting, but give it a few more years to develop even more complexity. Drink 2021-2030."

Falchini "Paretaio" IGT 2015
$37.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
8 cases on hand

You may know that 2015 was an amazing vintage across central Italy, historically fabulous, in fact.

"It's interesting to think back to a recent pair of great vintages such as 2007 and 2006 in Tuscany and begin to compare them with 2015 and 2016. In general, we think the wines from 2015 and 2016 that we tasted so far seem more precise and better made than those from the last great duo years."
JamesSuckling.com, September 2018

"Paretaio" Rosso Toscana IGT hails from a single vineyard in San Gimignano.  The blend is Sangiovese with 10% Merlot which adds mid-palate body to the wine without detracting from Sangiovese's cherry-tea-earthy typicity.  The wine is aged in French barriques for 18 months and for 18 more in the bottle before release to the market.

It is an elegant, harmonious, structured, velvety wine that will drink well for a decade or more.

Fontodi
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione
"Vigna del Sorbo" 2016
$109.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
4 cases in stock

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is another benchmark wine from Tuscany that shows the incredible potential of this iconic vintage. This beautiful single-vineyard Sangiovese reveals a graceful side with dark fruit intensity, cherry, plum, fresh violets and tilled earth. Tar, tobacco and licorice appear as delicate background tones, giving more volume and texture to the wine's sensorial impact. Vigna del Sorbo shows its own precise identity that is fiercely faithful to Sangiovese, but that also pushes the boundaries to go beyond our highest expectations of the grape in terms of color, concentration, aromatic complexity and staying power. That's the Panzano magic in a nutshell."
98 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, July 2019

"This is always an entrancing Gran Selezione and the 2016 shows dried raspberries, boysenberries, vanilla and brambleberries. Full-bodied and tightly wound with eye-catching minerality. The acidity sharpens out the exuberant red fruit perfectly. Incredible length and drinkability. Is this better even than the great 2015? I think so. From organically grown grapes. Drink in 2023."
98 points, JamesSuckling.com, June 2019

"Just as it was last year, the 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is magnificent. Dark, brooding and reticent, the 2016 is not ready to show all it's got. If anything, the 2016 is even more reticent than it was last year at this time. Vigna del Sorbo has a great track record for aging. I have no doubt the 2016 will blossom in bottle, but that is not going to happen anytime soon.  2026-2041."

Leviathan
California Red Blend 2018
$52.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
13 cases in stock

Leviathan was founded in 2004 by winemaker Andy Erickson, former winemaker at Screaming Eagle Winery and current proprietor of Favia. The goal was simple: to create one unique red wine, drawn from some of the best vineyards in Northern California.  Each vintage brings a new blend, but at its foundation is Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

This is a deep and muscular wine, which drinks really well young but has the stuffing to age nicely for up to a decade, especially in a vintage as great as 2018.

"Blackberry and asphalt aromas with some violets and rose petals. Medium to full body. Some carbon to the dark fruit. Tasty and delicious. Chewy now, but we like it already. Drinkable now, but will improve with age."

Ridge Vineyards
"Estate" Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
$109.99 per 750ml bottle, cases of 6
8 cases in stock

"If the US had a formal classification of estates or vineyards, such as those in Bordeaux or Burgundy, Ridge would be at the top of the list." - Decanter magazine, Sept 2013

Ridge's "Estate" Cabernet is one of California's great Super Seconds.  Certainly not a cast-off wine, but the second wine culled from the Monte Bello Vineyard in Santa Cruz Mountains appellation.  Almost like a "baby Monte Bello" this is the wine to drink while your Monte Bello rests in the cellar (for decades).

"Once again an overachiever, Ridge's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is regal. Aromatically intense and deep on the palate, the 2016 proves to be utterly captivating from the very first taste. Dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, dried flowers, leather and menthol infuse the 2016 with remarkable complexity. In 2016, the last year of the drought cycle Ridge made one of the very best editions of this wine. Just as remarkably, the 2016 is incredibly harmonious for such a young wine. 2022-2042."
94 points, Antonio Galloni. vinous.com, Oct 2019

"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes from the Santa Cruz Mountain estate, and it follows its big brother Monte Bello's style with a terrific sense of elegance paired with richness. Lots of crème de cassis, crushed violets, vanilla, tobacco leaf, and cedar notes flow to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, layered Cabernet Sauvignon that has terrific purity, building tannins, and a great finish. It offers pleasure today yet won't hit prime time for another 5-7 years, and it's going to evolve for 15-20 years (probably longer)."

"Wonderful blackberry and blackcurrant aromas here with hints of mint and fresh sage. Some cassis. Wrought iron, too. Full-bodied, tight and elegant with lovely tension. Beautiful. Ends fine and focused. Drinkable now, but better after 2022."
98 points, JamesSuckling.com, Feb 2020

"A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot and 9% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple 2017 Proprietary Red soars out of the glass with notions of baked blueberries, plum preserves and blackcurrant cordial, backed up by nuances of chocolate mint, wild sage, violets and pencil shavings, plus an earthy hint of Chinese five spice. The rich, seductive, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with spicy black fruit preserves, framed by wonderfully plush tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and opulent."
97+ points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Aug 2020

"The 2017 Proprietary Red Wine Sage Mountain Vineyard comes across as remarkably primary. Bright red-toned fruit and floral notes give the 2017 striking freshness as well as nuance. Deep and layered on the palate, with superb depth, the 2017 Continuum is easily one of the wines of the year. Even in the early going, it is truly magnificent."
