A Minute from the Manager
|
Hi,
Have you ever heard of something so simple and yet, it ended up being a huge game changer! That is what happened this past Saturday. I was talking with one of our farmers, and he was telling me how his family prepares a certain dish for their family table. He told me to take a bunch of three different varieties of greens and chop them up thin. Then, take a diced onion and some minced garlic, and place it all in a skillet with olive oil. Simple enough, right? I didn’t need to write it down. All I did was go home and do exactly what he said, and I have to tell you … it was unbelievably delicious! The greens, the onion, the garlic, all cooked down in a skillet of olive oil and served with a link of some scrumptious pork sausage, and the Rippy family found a new entrée favorite for our household!
But isn’t that true of most foods we enjoy? Simple and pure ingredients, not an elaborate 15-step recipe, just a few easy-to- remember instructions and voilà—a meal masterpiece!
This has to be one of the bonuses in shopping the Farmers Market. These farmers not only know how to grow amazing produce, but they can also tell you how to prepare it. That is why we are integrating into the Market each Saturday food demonstrations by our farmers and processors. We have a mobile kitchen that will be utilized for showing demonstrations on how to slice, dice, mince, julienne, and chop, in addition to recipe demonstrations. Some of the farmers will be using their own kitchen aids to help provide samples, but I’m so excited to know that, at the Farmers Market, we are now going to be able to show our shoppers not only
how to prepare certain food items but also how to thoroughly enjoy fresh, simple, and pure recipes.
Come see us this Saturday! The holidays are here, and we’re collecting for Toys for Tots at the Market!
Growing in Gratitude,
Lisa

Make the Best of This Holiday Season at the Market
|
The holiday season is a great time to remember to do two things
—(1) be thankful and (2) spread joy. Thanksgiving and Christmas, and other "warm-feeling" holidays are approaching before the year ends. The Mississippi Farmers Market is a great place to gather with family and friends during this season. Here, you can shop with those you love, shop
for
those you love, and indulge in some delicious Southern meals (for breakfast and lunch) from the Farmer's Table, which is located right inside the Market.
Upcoming Christmas Tree Event
On November 30, the Mississippi Farmers Market is hosting an event with extended Market hours and live, Genuine MS Christmas trees and wreaths for sale! What better way is there to prepare for Christmas? At this event, families from all over the state will gather to shop for produce that was brought to the Market from short distances (so it's all super-fresh!). In addition, families will be able to select and purchase their
dream
Christmas trees
—
already cut and ready to go home!
Santa Claus will be at the Market from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. to let you know if you're on his "naughty or nice" list! Grab some hot chocolate, cider, or flavored coffees, and enjoy the outdoor movie showings of Christmas classics. When you get hungry after the Farmer's Table closes, there will be food trucks to fulfill the needs of your taste buds. Of course, arts & craft vendors and farmers here until 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, as we all prepare for the festivities that come along with this popular busy, popular holiday season, let's embrace the meaning of it all. After all, this season is great for many reasons, including its ability to bring diverse people together to share love and spread joy and to look forward to the "fresh start" we all get at the start of the new year.
Spread Joy this Season
The Market is collecting toys for Toys for Tots, in addition to non-perishable food items for the Stew Pot, every day of the week and on Saturdays until December 13. To honor this season with our Market community, there will be a Christmas tree in the foyer of the Market for children and families to help us decorate. We would be delighted if you and your family participate as well.

5 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Thanksgiving
|
|
We all love to gather around the table with family for this nationally recognized holiday. Relatives come in from out of state, meals consist of at least six dishes with a lineup of dessert options, and every (wise) person wears bottoms with elastic waistbands to make room for the delicious foods to be consumed.
This time of the year reminds us to be grateful and to celebrate all the good things life has bestowed upon us. However, there are some interesting facts about Thanksgiving that you may not have known.
- The first Thanksgiving was a 3-day festival celebration in 1621.
- Sarah Josepha Hale, author of children's nursery rhyme “Mary Had A Little Lamb,” wrote letters to President Abraham Lincoln for years asking him to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. He did so in 1863.
- The annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City is one of the world's largest parades. The very first one, in 1914, used live animals from the Central Park Zoo.
- Americans eat 46 million turkeys each Thanksgiving. (That's a lot of "gobble, gobble!")
- The average Thanksgiving turkey weighs 15 pounds.

Caring for Your Live Christmas Tree
|
|
Needless to say, a live Christmas tree needs more TLC than an artificial tree. The goal is to keep your new tree alive and well! Check out these pointers:
~ Provide plenty of water (1 quart of water per inch of trunk diameter).
~Fill the tree stand with water and keep it filled.
Never let the water level go below the tree’s base.
~Use a stand that fits your tree.
~Right before placing the trunk into the tree stand, make a fresh, perpendicular cut to the bottom of the trunk.
~Keep the tree away from heat sources and use low-heat lights only on the tree if you decide to add lights.
You can pick up your live Christmas tree from the Market on Saturday, November 30, from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

The Farmer's Table is located inside the Mississippi Farmers Market. It is open Tuesday through Friday from
7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until business traffic slows. The restaurant serves dine-in and carry-out breakfast and lunch.
