Dear Friend of Manna,

It's officially holiday season-the kids (and some adults) have enjoyed the fun of "trick or treat."  Now our eyes and our appetites are turning to Thanksgiving.  We at Manna Food Center have much to be grateful for in Montgomery County.  For 35 years supporters like you have made our work possible.  As the lines grow longer at our distribution sites, I know that the Manna team will be able to help our neighbors set bountiful tables because we've received food and funds from the community.

In the midst of this generosity, though, is a growing concern that in the future receiving help to fight hunger may actually put some families at risk.  I'd rather talk turkey, as the saying goes, but I believe you as a Manna supporter want to stay informed so let me try and talk a little policy.

The current administration's proposed r ule  changes longstanding public policy regarding benefits immigrant families can use without causing negative consequences to their status.  Currently, legal immigrants can qualify for certain non-cash benefits after they have lived in the U.S. for at least five years and have met all requirements. The new proposed rule dramatically expands the list of programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), that could trigger adverse immigration consequences.  Under the proposed rule, immigrant families could be forced to make difficult choices between accessing vital programs that safeguard their health and nutrition and keeping their family together in the United States.

Manna's mission is to end hunger, and we sincerely welcome new ideas that help our society make that possible.  However, we are very concerned that these proposed changes will actually work against self-sufficiency.  You may want to learn more about what the proposed changes are and how you can express your opinions during the public comment period which ends on December 10.   Visit the Food Research and Action Center for resources.

If you would like to know about other actions Manna is taking to help make Montgomery County Hunger Free, please consider attending our next Advocacy Task Force meeting on December 12 at our Gaithersburg location at 7:00 p.m, or give me a call at 240-268-2524 to discuss our priorities.

May your Thanksgiving holiday be full of good food in welcoming spaces,

Donate Funds & Help Neighbors in Need!
More than 33,000 children are going hungry in Montgomery County. To end hunger in our county, more working families and seniors need access to healthy and nutritious food. Manna Food Center is leading the way to end hunger through innovative programs that expand our reach into more communities and equip children and families to live healthily.

This holiday season you have the chance to give back and impact the lives of neighbors in need.

We know your support makes a difference. One mom shared how her son was very excited after learning about new vegetables on Manny, our Mobile Kitchen and Pop-up Pantry. She shares:

"My son came home insisting that we go to the grocery store to buy cauliflower, so he could show me how to roast it...he says it tastes like popcorn."

Join Manna supporters in making Giving Tuesday a special day that feeds hope for children and families in Montgomery County.
Host a Holiday Giving Fundraiser

Every day thousands of children in Montgomery County go hungry. It's harder for children to learn and grow when they are hungry. The high cost of living makes it necessary for working families to seek help with food. With your support, Manna Food Center can expand our weekend food program and give more families across the county healthy food.

Join the global movement to give back to your community on Giving Tuesday (November 27)! This is your chance to think globally and act locally to support the causes that matter to you.

Here are 3 ways to make an impact:
  • Fundraise - Create a Facebook Fundraising  page for Giving Tuesday. Set your goal (suggested goal: $1000) and share with your friends on Facebook why the work at Manna Food Center means so much to you. https://fb.com/fund/mannafoodcenter/
  • Share - If you can't create a Facebook fundraising page, share Manna's fundraising page and/or donation website so people can give quickly and easily. Go to mannafood.org.
  • Donate - Everyone can help fight hunger and feed hope by donating to Manna. Go to mannafood.org to donate today.
