Training September 2020

Welcome to our latest training newsletter. Most of us have been working - and getting training - from home now for six months. In Scotland at least, the situation is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Our courses will all be online for the rest of the year.

Booking is now open for our November courses: Further Proofreading, Further Copy-editing and another session of Introduction to Copy-editing due to demand..

As well as our own courses, we are highlighting online courses being run by BookMachine (CAMPUS training courses) and BIC who run production, ebook and metadata courses.

We have some news of some jobs, other opportunities and events of interest.

Finally, the big news in publishing training is that the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG) is to take over the running of the Publishing Training Centre (PTC). IPG will also seek to partner with other publishing organisations and we look forward to working with them. See the Press Release of 18 September 2020.

Publishing Scotland online training courses

FURTHER COPY-EDITING

Monday 2 and Thursday 5 November 2020: 10 am to noon on each day

This 4-hour course picks up where 'Introduction to Copy-editing' left off. It assumes that delegates have attended this course or are familiar with the methods and techniques it contains. Because this course will be run online (on Zoom) in two separate sessions, there will be a chance for delegates to submit an assignment to the tutor after the first session in order to receive one-to-one feedback and advice. This course attracts 2 CIEP upgrade points.

The non-member's fee is £135+VAT. There is a discount for BookMachine members. The fee for PS and CIEP members is £100+VAT. Book and pay on Ticket Tailor.

FURTHER PROOFREADING

Monday 9 and Thursday 12 November 2020: 10 am to noon on each day

This 4-hour course picks up where 'Introduction to Proofreading' left off. It assumes that delegates have attended this course or are familiar with the methods and techniques it contains. This course attracts 2 CIEP upgrade points.

The non-member's fee is £135+VAT. There is a discount for BookMachine members. The fee for PS and CIEP members is £100+VAT. Book and pay on Ticket Tailor.

INTRODUCTION TO COPY-EDITING

Monday 16, Thursday 19, Monday 23 and Thursday 26 November 2020: 10 am to 11.30 am on each day

This course filled quickly in September so we are running it again before the year ends. Led by regular tutor Cathy Tingle, it is suitable for people in the publishing industry, those who want to work in editing on a freelance basis, and anyone else who has responsibility for the presentation of written material. Some proofreading experience is desirable. This course attracts 3 CIEP upgrade points.

The non-member's fee is £200+VAT. There is a discount for BookMachine members. The fee for PS and CIEP members is £150+VAT. Book and pay on Ticket Tailor.

UK CHILDREN'S SUMMIT

Wednesday 23 September 2020

Exploring the world of non-fiction content for children: books & other media, This year's UK Children's Summit 2020, hosted by Nielsen Book and The London Book Fair, will now take place virtually on Wednesday 23 September. For details of the conference, see the Nielsen website.

BIC'S AN INTRODUCTION TO PRODUCTION

Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 November 2020: 1.30pm to 4.30pm each day

Aimed at those new to book production, this course with Heather O'Connell provides an interactive introduction to how books are made, looking at the whole process including repro, colour management, the different print and binding methods within the book industry, and the language used.

Fees: BIC Members £240 + VAT; Friends of BIC £285 + VAT; Non Members £325 + VAT.
