1st Place - Daniel Demontagnac, 11th grade
I am strong because…

This piece represents the inner mental and spiritual strength it took to maintain a peaceful mind and state of being in a world that is constantly pressuring me to lose my humanity. I sit at the bottom of a withering tree of life while a serpent wearing the mask of a demon approaches me whispering in my ear to join the world of ruin and chaos around me yet I remain unphased and continue to stay in a state of meditation at peace with myself as my solar plexus chakra grows brighter and brighter which represents self-love and healing. This piece is not just spiritual but also a physical reality for me, I’m from a rough area, so every day I go home I’m given the option of selling drugs, joining a gang, or becoming another statistic either by my peers egging me on or so on, but I always turn those offers down because I understand that there is a greater calling over my life so I remain myself and it takes a great deal of strength to do so.
2nd Place - Marie Fiemeyer, 12th grade
I am strong because…

I have people to rely on to help me through life’s trials. Those closest to me act as support, and this is the aspect that I chose to portray in this piece. It reflects how they ease the burden of any inevitable challenge that I will face. I can trust them to be there when I fail, and knowing that I have a group to fall back on allows me to be brave in the face of adversity. Only together can we be strong.
3rd Place - Elizaveta Makarenko, 12th grade
I am strong because…

Through hardships I find myself looking for a source of help. I can’t describe myself as a strong persona but with the help of my loved ones I’m able to rise up and keep standing. In this piece using a composition similar to the sacred paintings found in the past, where a rising hero enters a period of struggle. Commonly painted to have received help or blessings from above illustrated as angels or a higher being. I as the painter of this piece retold the same story, though the angels are my relatives and the hero is me. Struggles in life all of us face each day, I find myself strong looking back at my family as my leading support. During many periods of my journey they held onto, what I illustrated as the stick was figuratively my hold of life. Looking back at what makes me strong I can only relate to those close to me, through my appearance I may seem as though I have everything together but the pieces remain collected only due to their hold. And so in conclusion we come full circle from the struggles I faced and to the hero-like figure I have become.
Honorable Mention - Hannah Na, 9th grade

SEMESTER CFE & PMA TESTING
This week we will be conducting Semester CFE and PMA testing and will be following a modified bell schedule. A copy of the bell schedule is located on the school website.

CFE Testing: Students scheduled in a semester-length course will be taking a Common Final Exam (CFE). CFEs are for subjects without state-created assessments like the state FSA. First semester CFE testing begins December 7th and runs through December 18th. Because CFEs are worth 20% of a student’s semester grade, they are considered high-stakes assessments.

LaunchED@Home students taking the test virtually are required to share their cameras to recreate the in-person proctoring students experience during state and national testing. OCPS employees will conduct all online monitoring.

If Launch Ed@Home students opt not to share their camera during CFE testing, or if the camera is not operational, we will work with you and your student to schedule a time to test on campus with a live proctor. If a student opts not to share their camera during testing and are not comfortable testing on campus, they will receive a score of a 59% on the exam for now, but can make up the exam during Spring CFE testing sessions in May.

For questions contact Mr. Rodriguez, Testing Coordinator, at 117969@ocps.net

Animated US Flag
"Manning the rails" has become a traditional way to honor the USS Arizona Memorial when all U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Merchant Marine vessels transit Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Pictured here, a Sailor salutes the USS Arizona Memorial as their ship enters Pearl Harbor for a port visit. As the ship goes by, it renders honors by sounding, “Attention,” and all hands topside render a hand salute until the ship has passed the memorial and “Carry on” is sounded.

Seventy nine years ago on the morning of December 7, 1941 aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack upon the island of Oahu in Hawaii striking Pearl Harbor and other military bases. On board the battleship USS Arizona, 1,177 Sailors and Marines were lost.
