GEOHAZARDS AROUND THE WORLD Six vehicles were damaged by a rockfall incident along the A82 roadway near Loch Ness, in Scotland, on the morning of December 2.
L’Orient Le Jour reported on a November 30 rockfall incident in Kfarnabrakh, Lebanon. A large section of mountain side collapsed. A video of the collapse has been posted on YouTube, with particularly stunning movements of rock occurring from about 0:45 – 1:20 in the video.
A November 27 slope failure in Spain was also captured on video, with the primary collapse beginning at about the 0:25 mark. Some reports have indicated that reinforcement projects had been occurring and that more were expected in the area, prior to the failure. What may be the most remarkable thing about it is that the road agency kept half of the motorway open DURING the collapse!
Travel on the important Gotthard railway in Switzerland was briefly disrupted in November by rockfall onto the tracks. A rockfall netting system helped significantly curtail the incident. The site was able to reopen after clearing and geological investigation less than 48 hours later.
