BPSI READS:
Open Conversations on Race, Equity, Diversity, and Otherness
Sunday January 30th - 1:30-2:30 pm EST
“BPSI READS” is an initiative to facilitate regular conversations within BPSI, the larger psychoanalytic community, and the public on issues of Race, Equity, Diversity, and Otherness. Thank you to everyone who has participated thus far. We invite you and your guests to please join us for the next BPSI READS:
Special Guest: M. Fakhry Davids MSc
Sunday, January 30th, 2022
1:30-2:30 pm EST

Reading: M. Fakhry Davids (2011)

Introduction: “The Impact of Racism” (linked here)
Chapter Three: “Theoretical Considerations” (linked here)
When Fakhry Davids’ book “Internal Racism” was published in 2011, it brought a groundbreaking new psychoanalytic lens on the problems of racism. This BPSI READS will be a conversation about the concept of Internal Racism. We will take up the main ideas presented in Chapter 3, “Theoretical Considerations”. We will talk about Fakhry Davids’ model of an Internal Racist Organization: as a pathologic, intrapsychic structure, that he proposes exists in every ‘normal’ mind. We will also talk about self-in-relation-to-group, and how unconsciously, each person internalizes an in-group identity, which has direct application to understanding how racism functions internally, in the mind.

We will take up why it matters: We know that Psychoanalysis serves an overwhelmingly white population. What is our self-concept as a profession?  We are a discipline that aspires to a scientific model of the mind, but do our psychoanalytic models work in multiply diverse populations?  We aspire to make psychoanalysis available to more than a narrow group of white analysands. But to do so, we must create spaces to talk about racism, and how it functions in the culture, in the group, and in our minds.

In this BPSI READS gathering, we look forward to conversation with Fakhry about his book, his ideas, and to deepening the dialogue about racism.

M. Fakhry Davids MSc (Clin Psych) is a psychoanalyst in full-time clinical practice in London. He is a Fellow and Supervising & Training Analyst of the British Psychoanalytic Society, Hon Associate Professor in the Psychoanalysis Unit, University College London. He is a Board Member of Partners in Confronting Collective Atrocities (PCCA www.p-cca.org) He also holds honorary appointments in the Tavistock Clinic and the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex. He chairs the IPA Liaison Committee for the South African Psychoanalytic Association and is a Member of the Holmes Commission for Racial Equality in the American Psychoanalytic Association.
