Professor Scott Reinardy was elected to the AEJMC Publications Committee. He will serve a three-year term.
Associate Professor Jerry Crawford’s white paper, co-authored with Anastasia Kononova, Mia Moody-Ramirez and Carolyn Bronstein, members of the AEJMC PF&R Committee, has been published. The essay addresses the handling of free speech during the COVID-19 pandemic and how threats to free speech, particularly during racially charged periods, may affect teaching in journalism and mass communication programs.
Associate Professor Mugur Geana's research article "COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among women leaving jail: A qualitative study" has been accepted for publication in the Public Health Nursing journal. The study, of which Dr. Geana is the principal author, explored vaccine-related attitudes, beliefs and behaviors of 25 women released from jail during the pandemic. The study revealed very high levels of vaccine hesitancy among this population, mostly driven by low health literacy, low knowledge about the vaccine, negative influence from family and friends, and exposure to conspiracy theories. The findings of this research, conducted in collaboration with Professor Megha Ramaswamy and Sherri Anderson from KU Medical Center, constitutes the basis for the development of a tailored intervention to promote COVID-19 vaccination among this underserved population.
Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski led a virtual Open Education Network workshop for faculty at Middle Tennessee State University.
At the invitation of Harvard University’s metaLAB, Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo gave a presentation on community-based research approaches to addressing social justice issues on April 12 via Zoom.

He discussed the benefits of pre-recording and captioning video lectures as well as best practices for using videoconferencing chat features.
Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo and doctoral student Muhammad Ittefaq's co-authored manuscript “Factors Associated with the Belief in COVID-19 related Conspiracy Theories: An Empirical Analysis of Young and Middle-aged Pakistani Adults” has been accepted for publication in Health, Risk, & Society. The paper is co-authored with Assistant Professor Waqas Ejaz and Assistant Professor Farah Naz from National University of Sciences and Technology Islamabad, Pakistan.
