MISHMERES PROGRAM DEDICATED
The 5780 school-wide
Mishmeres
program was launched with typical fanfare – but with atypical reverence and inspiration, as the program was officially named in memory of the beloved
Dr.
Bertha Nelkin, A”H
, long-time teacher of college classes in the high school and unforgettable member of the Baltimore community. Rabbi Zweig spoke briefly about Dr. Nelkin. Her son
R’ Avrohom Nelkin
delivered a message about her unique qualities and special appreciation for Bais Yaakov and its students. The student body, together with the Nelkins, were then treated to an introduction to
Mishmeres
by Twelfth Grader
Estee Pretter
and the long-awaited “breakout” performance. Miss Pretter explained the importance of
Shmiras HaLashon
, just one facet of the
Mishmeres
focus on matters
bein adam l’chavero
. We are grateful to
Mr. Joseph Nelkin
and family for their sponsorship and this dedication. May the program serve as an everlasting
zechus
for
Dr. Nelkin.

RABBI DANIEL MECHANIC SPEAKS TO OUR ELEVENTH GRADE
Rabbi Daniel Mechanic’s
annual visit lived up to its advance billing, as he presented a captivating and entertaining tour de force to the Eleventh Grade regarding the solid rock foundation of our e
munah
. His talk was most thought-provoking and students remained long after it was officially completed to probe with further questions and observations. This annual program has always been an unqualified success at school, and it was as well-received this year as ever.

GEDOLEI YISROEL PROGRAM - INAUGURAL LUNCHTIME SCHMUESS
We thank
Mrs. Adina Turoff
and the
Gedolei Yisroel
Program
for introducing a new
Bais Yaakov High School activity – a short, inspirational message about one of the
Gedolei Yisroel
being studied. The inaugural lunchtime “
schmues
s” presentation was provided by
Mrs. Chanie Hendler
, who spoke to approximately 100 students about the great
Ibn Ezra
, reflecting on how his persistence in the face of personal challenges enabled him to become one of the great
Tanach
commentators in our galaxy of classical
meforshim
. Mrs. Hendler and the many students in attendance voluntarily gave up their lunchtime to experience this short burst of inspiration and learning.

MRS. FAIGE ZELCER INSPIRES OUR MOTHERS AND TEACHERS
Mrs. Faigie Zelcer
of
Penimi
in Montreal provided an insightful and stimulating workshop to the high school faculty on how to reach out and guide students. Members of the Middle School administration joined as well. Mrs. Zelcer’s talk to Bais Yaakov mothers on the same evening, also sponsored by Bais Yaakov, highlighted the need to focus on and nurture time-honored
Torah
values to offset encroaching values of the technology era.
Link Up
follow-up groups are still being formed to continue this conversation, and mothers are encouraged to join. If you are interested in joining a group please contact Mrs. Chana Lavi at

Close to forty students came out on this past Sunday evening to hear
Mrs. Gila Manolson,
at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Meir Neuberger,
speak on the topics of self-esteem and relationships. Mrs. Manolson’s books on these and related issues have been best sellers and have influenced thousands, by means of her down-to-earth, insightful style in presenting
Torah
ideals on topics that are challenging to adolescents.
