Family Service Madison introduces a new program: Holding Teachers, Holding Babies: Infant-Toddler Mental Health Classroom Consultation Services.
The first three years of life are critical to brain development. Positive and nurturing early relationships and early experiences provide a strong foundation for a young child's social and emotional well-being. Safe, nurturing relationships and environments are essential for a young child's ability to make healthy neural connections for optimal growth and development. More than half of all infants
and toddlers in the U.S. spend all or some of their day being cared for by someone other than their parent. At FSM, we want to ensure infants and toddlers in our communities are receiving the highest quality care.

What is Infant-Toddler Mental Health Classroom Consultation?
  • Focused on early care and education settings (local child care centers)
  • Collaborative and relationship-based
  • Capacity-building resources and strategies for adults who care for infants and toddlers
  • Delivered by professional consultants with early childhood mental health expertise

What does FSM offer local child care programs through Holding Teachers, Holding Babies:
  • Professional development and staff training at local child care sites focusing on relationship-based approaches to caring for infants and toddlers and supporting early social and emotional well-being
  • Initial classroom observations
  • Follow-up implementation planning and support for the whole classroom
  • Individual child behavioral observations
  • Follow-up support for individual child behavioral needs
